You may have found our site because you are concerned that you may have a parasitic infection. In this section, we will help you by telling you which parasite symptoms are most commonly associated with parasitic infections. Armed with a little knowledge, you will then be able to take the right actions to move you in a healthier, parasite-free direction.

The parasite symptoms that are associated with parasites and the infections they cause vary greatly and can indicate other causes. Some parasites can exist in the body for years and never produce a single symptom. Others will have symptoms so severe you would require immediate medical attention. It can be very hard to pinpoint an exact cause of some of the symptoms or even be misdiagnosed.

Chronic fatigue or extreme tiredness is a common symptom of a parasitic infection. The reason someone infected by a parasite may feel so tired is because the parasite living in the intestines will sap the nutrients out of the food he or she digests. The parasite will thrive, and its human host will be under nourished.

Iron deficiency, or anemia, is often caused by worm parasites in the intestines. This is a major contributor to feeling chronically fatigued. Some differences between chronic fatigue and just your run-of-the-mill tiredness are that chronic fatigue will not improve with rest, becomes worse with both mental and physical activity, and is associated with feeling weak and sore muscles.

Since many human parasites make their home in the digestive track, their hosts are likely to experience digestive related symptoms. Most of these are very unpleasant and can be embarrassing. They include belching, excessive flatulence or gas, vomiting, bloody stools, and diarrhea. Some may experience fecal incontinence or oily stools.

It’s typically those microscopic and pesky protozoa that cause the more uncomfortable symptoms like diarrhea or loose stools. This is because they release prostaglandin which is substance that causes a loss in chloride and sodium. The result is stools that are watery because the body is attempting to rid itself of the attacker.

Constipation can also be caused because some of the larger parasitic worms can lodge themselves in the intestines and cause a blockage. Over-the-counter stool softeners and a healthy diet should clear up natural bouts of constipation. You may have a parasitic worm causing a blockage if stool softeners don’t provide relief.

A common condition caused by these intestinal parasites is irritable bowel syndrome. This is a painful and uncomfortable condition that is a result of the parasite irritating the wall of the intestine and causing swelling. Many doctors have been quick to dismiss IBS as just something people must cope with. In the year 2000, researchers in England did a study that showed a significant link between the parasite giardia and irritable bowel syndrome. Ridding the body of this parasite gave great relief to the patients who had previously been diagnosed with IBS.

Since parasites don’t always stay put in the intestines, but rather move about and enter the blood stream, nervous system, and the organs, joint and muscle pain can be a symptom to look out for. This joint pain can commonly be mistaken for arthritis when in reality it is caused by inflammation due to the parasites becoming encased in a sac and existing despite our body’s best efforts to expel it.

Some parasites can cause a person to become agitated, nervous, or anxious. Researchers believe this is due to the body reacting in a way to try and rid itself of the foreign body. It’s also known that parasites release waste which can have an adverse effect on the central nervous system.

After him telling me about aspartame I quit in 2 days, from several a day to one a day, for the next 2 days, and then none. Thanks to this site I found out what my next few days was from – ASPARTAME WITHDRAWAL- I had bad headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, high blood pressure, grumpy from feeling like I had a flu symptom. Fortunately I only had the bad headaches for a few days, and then yesterday, I was waking up and noticed that I didn’t have the immense pain in my finger joints. I was amazed, but not sure if it was true or not. As I got up and started moving my fingers, I noticed the extreme joint movement pain was not happening. I still have a stiffness in my hands, and finger joints, but also, I only took about 4 Tylenol yesterday,, I was taking 4 Tylenol- about 4-5 times a day. And that didn’t take care of it, I was ready to find some morphine. That BAD! My finger joints and elbows are still stiff and ache, but about 85% less than before. My wife quit too, she was only drinking about one a day, but feels better too. Also I am not as tired as I was, but one amazing thing is that I don’t crave the Diet Coke! I am working on finding other drinks and waiting to see if the swelling in my fingers goes down, and the stiffness goes away! Thank God for this site and Spell check. Fingers are really stiff and make a lot of type O”s.

God Bless and have a super day!

Leanne: (my improvements)

I had shooting pains in my head for probably the first month or two. It’s been 3 months since I stopped drinking diet soda. Within in the first month my brain fog really lifted and I had some computer issues at the time and it necessitated checking all my files to my backup. I was stunned to find where things were filed. I realized how much my thinking has improved since I got off aspartame.

My muscle pain was intensified for the first two months and it didn’t settle down much after that except I went into a gallbladder attack so I did some “Stone Free” for 10 days and then did a liver gallbladder flush and now some of that muscle pain has subsided as well as my liver and gallbladder are functioning better.

I’m finding that aspartame is so toxic that other modalities such as a liver gallbladder flush (and I’m sure I’ll do multiple flushes to really clean it out) and colon cleansing may be needed to really clean this out your system. During the flush the part of my head – only where my hair is, and especially in front where my hair had thinned, was like a spinkler system of sweat during the detox – must have kicked out a lot of aspartame.

I also read that thinning hair is one of many signs of liver/gallbladder overload. I believe in time all these things can be reversed back to good health. Our liver filters our blood, try running your A/C or the gas line in your car with a dirty filter and you won’t get very far. Clean the filter and your back in business. Apparently it’s a bigger task than I thought it was going to be.

I noticed that because I was juicing daily it really cut down my symptoms and stopped my cravings. It really surprised me how much easier it was to quit because it calmed my nerves. Figure out what substitutes help you. I drink seltzer water when I want bubbles, and I have a regular Coke once every or every other week, and that works for me.

Thanks for your website, and comment section. I’ve gotten a lot of good info here, and the encouragement to keep going.
I must admit that this is tougher than I thought it would be. After getting many of the symptoms of aspartame poisoning, I finally realized that it was the aspartame doing it to me.
I quit 21 days ago today, but I’m still getting the headaches and spaciness, and I’m getting discouraged. But the research I’ve done shows a variety of opinions as to how long it can take before the headaches go away, 2-4 wks, and even 2 months or more. I just hope it’s soon. It’s my own fault. My wife warned me about it a couple of years ago, but I was feeling fine then, so I didn’t listen. And I didn’t pay attention to all of the warnings for the last 25 years or so. I’ve been drinking Diet Pepsi since it came out with aspartame … and lots of it. I also used about 4-8 packets of equal a day for sweetening coffee, tea, and other things. I had no idea how addicted I was (am).
I’m become a poster boy, warning all of my friends and family about it … but, just like me, those who use it think it won’t happen to them. One niece who drank Diet Pepsi heavily throughout her pregnancy refuses to consider the possibility that it caused her son to be autistic. Now she has lupus, but of course, the aspartame is not the reason. serious denial.

Has anyone else been as addicted as me, and if so, how long did it take for the headaches to go away?
Thanks.

My headaches went away after 3-4 weeks. Cold chills and sweats after 4-5 weeks. Sounds like your almost there. Don’t give up.

6 days ago I became aware of the negative side affects of aspartame and could be a poster child for aspartame poisoning. I was drinking 3-6 Diet Dr. Peppers a day for at least 15 years. For the first two days, I limited myself to one per day and the third day, it just taste bad, so I haven’t had one for four days now.

Yesterday, I got the headache between my eyes that came and went a few times throughout the day and I was grumpy, so I googled aspartame withdrawals. (I haven’t quit caffeine so, its not that.) Anyway, I am hoping this mild headache is the only withdrawal symptom I have. How long does it take before these other possible symptoms to occur? If I were going to have other symptoms would they have already started?

Aside from the mild headache, I have actually felt better in terms of mental clarity.

Everyone reacts differently to the withdrawal. For example, my Mother had almost no side effects from the withdrawal other than the constant craving for Diet Coke.

No more effective than placebo for reducing duration or severity of cold symptoms

RCT = randomized controlled trial.

Information from references 7, 11, 14, and 23 through 28.

Antibiotics and Antihistamines. In adults, as in children, antibiotics do not decrease the duration or severity of illness, even when purulent rhinitis is present.7 Sedating and nonsedating antihistamines are ineffective for cough and other cold symptoms.11, 23, 29

Opioids, Intranasal Corticosteroids, and Nasal Saline Irrigation. Despite widespread use, codeine is no more effective than placebo for reducing cough.11, 24 The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) does not recommend other opioids for the treatment of cough.24 Although intranasal corticosteroids reduce swelling and inflammation of the nasal mucosa, they have not been shown to significantly benefit patients with the common cold.26, 27 Nasal irrigation with hypertonic or normal saline does not provide significant relief for cold symptoms in adults.28

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products. When used solely for treatment of symptoms after they appear, vitamin C does not consistently reduce their duration or severity.14 Herbal preparations containing Echinacea angustifolia are not beneficial.25 Many physicians have recommended increased fluid intake and inhalation of heated, humidified air to thin secretions during a cold. No randomized trials have assessed the effect of increasing fluid intake in adults,30 and a Cochrane review found inconsistent study results for steam inhalation.31

Decongestants With or Without Antihistamines. Oral or topical decongestants alone seem to be somewhat effective for short-term relief of cold symptoms, compared with placebo.32 Pseudoephedrine and phenylephrine decrease nasal edema to improve air intake.32 Although antihistamines do not work as monotherapy, combination medications containing a first-generation antihistamine and decongestant may be slightly beneficial in relieving general symptoms, nasal symptoms,23 and cough.11 Combination medications are recommended by the ACCP to treat acute cough.29

Anticholinergics, Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin. Ipratropium (Atrovent) is the only orally inhaled anticholinergic recommended by the ACCP for cough caused by a common cold,24 and one study showed that the nasal formulation decreases rhinorrhea and sneezing.33 Studies of dextromethorphan and guaifenesin for cough are almost evenly split, with some demonstrating benefit and others not.11, 24

Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs. These medications effectively relieve pain from headache, myalgias, and arthralgias experienced during a cold; however, decreased sneezing is the only effect they have on respiratory symptoms.34 The ACCP has concluded that naproxen (Naprosyn) is beneficial in the treatment of acute cough.24

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products. Table 5 summarizes the herbal preparations that may be effective in adults.10, 14, 18, 20, 35 – 38 An herbal solution containing P. sidoides was shown to reduce the duration and severity of 10 different cold symptoms in a randomized controlled trial.37 Another randomized controlled trial demonstrated the benefit of Andrographis paniculata (Kalmcold) in improving symptom scores.35 A systematic review also indicated that A. paniculata, alone or in combination with Acanthopanax senticosus, may be more effective for symptom relief than placebo.36

The of the many hazards of travel to Central American countries like Mexico is the possibility of exposure to one or more of the many tropical diseases endemic to this region. Most U.S. citizens have had little contact with these diseases so that they are more vulnerable to an unfortunate exposure than natives might be.

Fortunately, by taking some sensible precautions the Mexico traveler should be able to enjoy this country without having to bed down for days on end, seeking out medical care or having to suffer with the consequences for many months after the trip has ended.

Do you think my husband is poisoning me? I drink a lot of water and healthy drinks and my diet is actually good. I eat red meat once a month, eat vegetables and fruits, fish, and chicken. This is been going on since 2004. If I was being poisoned, it could be off and on. Only when I have life insurance and it's not even a lot of money. Am I dealing with a crazy man?

2) If you have feasible proof, divorce your husband. What if you can ot prevent the continued poisoning? Death is the result. Run and do not turn back.

1) I have been poisoned two times that I know of by my husband. The first time had to be liquid because I had left a tape recorder on and heard him say he put it in my watermelon. It had to be liquid.

Is there some way they do this or can it be purchased in liquid form? The last time he opened a soft drink for me before I got in the car. Can it dissolve that quickly? What am I dealing with here and how do I avoid this?

Does a Britta water filter keep my drinking water safe from it?

I feel awful for all of these commenters!! I went through awful anxiety/depression myself, took various meds (xanax, clonopin, and others that I don't recall now because I was in such a brain fog). I felt detached and suicidal on the meds. I changed my diet dramatically, switched to organic food (from cherrios and poptarts!). I found Dr Atkins vita nutrient solution book and took amino acids, b vitamins, GABA, Sam-e, valerian root, as much as I could afford because I felt.so awful! And those things worked for me! It took about 3-4 weeks. I remember waking up one morning and consciously thinking "I don't feel so bad!" And I never looked back. I suffered from anxiety for at least 20 years, starting at age 13. Did you know low thyroid can cause anxiety? Sure enough I had low thyroid! I also treat that naturally. I'm on this thread now because my teenage daughter has severe depression, and she doesn't want to try my therapies. She has it in her head that she just wants a drug. I found these threads taking about horrible withdrawal and I feel terrible for everyone, and sure that I don't want her on this drug. My advice to every one, eat real food! Our food supply is nothing like what got us here over hundreds of thousands of years. I was eating the standard American diet (acronym is SAD) and I was paying the price. You can't eat sugar and poptarts and spaghetti and expect your body and brain to function properly. Yes, it's more expensive, but if you look at it the other way, cheap food is a rip off, because it's not giving you what you need to be healthy, and illness stinks!

I was on lexapro for 5 days for anxiety.it made most of my symptoms worse and I had to stop given that I'm self employed and was risking the loss of major contracts due to its side effects. This may sound odd but for years I was on a drug called Dexedrine(dates back to the turn of the century)for mild ADHD.it may sound(as it did to me)counter intuitive given that it's an amphetamine but this drug really helps calm the mind and it does it almost instantly.ive tested this on over half a dozen people who at one point were struggling with mild(divorce)to major depression(my wife)and everyone had good to great things to say about it.it was perceived by a psychiatrist and I can't thank him enough it literally saved lives.after 10 years I started weaning myself off with few side effects(I started on a large dose 15mg x 2) if any because of a back injury.i was fine till last year when I started experiencing chest pain and a year later after a ton of tests and a bit of a breakdown with realized it was anxiety. I made sure I had a bit of a stock pile of the drug just in case and would use it on occasion when I needed a mental/physical boost or to help a friend in dire straights. with the green light from their doctor. Now here is my point,if you research this drug it isolates the same protein as amphetamines and cocaine. this apparently makes it the latest greatest drug for depression,I couldn't disagree more. there's no money to be made on Dexedrine therefore doctors are leds by the nose and prescribe the latest greatest. Within 45 minutes of taking the first dose I was a changed person(a bit of euphoria but hey who doesn't enjoy that, especially after feeling like crap for whatever amount of time prior)happy,up lifting thoughts concentration(I know I use a lot of brackets. I'm still in a fog from this drug)this is still the drug of choice for the us Air Force when on bombing missions. You have to ask yourself, why in the world the most advanced military on earth use such an "out dated drug"?Because it works, fast with no or little side effects. a B2 bomber is worth 2 billion dollars, they certainly aren't skimping on the price of drugs.im currently using 5mg twice a day to counteract the drug(otherwise I'm useless at this point)and will up the dose accordingly over the next few days and hopefully feel normal again. Oh yeah I forgot my side effects. tons of energy, laser focus, happy, slight decrease in appetite for the first week or so,positive /creative thoughts and it(according to everyone who's used t around me who has used it,seems to lift the heavy vail like feeling associated with depression and some if not most anxieties. All this being said, this is not a silver bullet or cure all for everyone and your doctor(who in all likely hood will be ill informed on the subject)may not want or know how to prescribe it but it's worth a shot and if not a psychiatrist would be more willing to given that my doctor was almost opposed to it from the start.Bare in mind I've tried other drugs pre and post Dexedrine and one I tried that was "non addictive" had again terrible side effects and had me back on Dexedrine within a few weeks.ok one history lesson your doctor won't want to here, the only reason hitler was able to convince his army to go deep into Russia with heavy loses, frostbite and starvation was do to a form of Dexedrine. He and his doctors were fully aware of the psychological effects of this drug given that he himself was an amphetamine user.

Well I hope this helps someone if not many people but I must state that this is what I and others in my inner circle have experienced when in their darkest hours and maybe something you would want to explore. yes it's an amphetamine and with over 11 years full time experience at a high dose then another 2 at lower I can personally report no ill side effects just like the few long term studies have shown.

Good luck to everyone and please do your research before you approach your doctor. be armed with concrete research(all of the above and more)and your doctor maybe willing to give it a try. it's not for everyone but it is for most. and remember it targets the same area of the brain as lexapro. oh yeah cognitive behavioural therapy should be accompanied with any of these drugs for long term success.

I took Lexapro @ 20mg daily for 6 years. I weaned off by decreasing to 15mg for a month, then 10mg for a month and finally, 5mg for a month. I have been off for two weeks now. The past week, my skin will start feeling like fire ants have bit me. It starts on my face and travels to my arms, then chest and stomach and then finally my legs. Also itching. I am sleeping about 4-5 hours a night (Not all at once) but I awake several times a night. I have NO anxiety. Is anyone else suffering from the stinging nerve issue?

Did they finally go away? I am having that exact same feeling for a month now.:(

I have just started reducing my amount from 5MG to.25MG - I understand just how you feel, I've been on Lexapro for 6 years. Ugh.. Ugh. Ugh. Do you every get the feeling of feeling out of you body. So hard to explain.

I'm also cutting down my clonazepam (Good God).

I don't even know what feeling normal is like.

Stay strong. I'm in the same boat.

Yes I am getting those out of body sensations too! I thought I was going completely insane. I'm weaning off lexapro at this time and just stopped cold turkey after only three days of weaning off. The next day I felt like my brain lagged behind my body movements by maybe a couple of milliseconds. It's like my proprioception went offline for a bit, and then a moment later I'm back. Even breathing felt alien to my brain.

I have been on multiple mental health medications whilst going through a long drawn out court case (7 years).

The medications per day included:

Lexapro (20 to 40mg past 7 years)

Mirtazapine (30mg past 7 years)

Sodium Valproate (1500mg, 1 year, 2013)

You must go to emergency immediately if you have flu-like symptoms and also one of the following:

  • Breathing difficulty that persists or worsens
  • Blue lips
  • Intense chest pain
  • Intense headache that persists or worsens
  • Drowsiness, difficulty staying awake, weakness
  • Confusion, disorientation
  • Seizures (body stiffens and muscles contract in a jerky and involuntary manner)
  • No urination for 12 hours, excessive thirst

If your baby is less than 3 months old and has a fever, bring him or her to emergency immediately.

If your child has a fever and appears very sick, lacks energy and refuses to play, bring him or her to a doctor immediately, or call Info-Santé 811.

If you require immediate help to get to emergency, call 9-1-1.

Some situations require you to be evaluated by a nurse who can offer specific advice regarding your condition. The nurse can also assess whether or not you should see a doctor immediately.

You should call Info-Santé 811 if you or your child are in one of the following situations:

  • You are short of breath
  • You have difficulty breathing
  • You are unsure whether or not to see a doctor

Most people in good health get better from the flu by themselves after 5 to 7 days. You should get good rest and eat according to your appetite.

Coughing and fatigue may last for 2 weeks or even longer.

You may relieve symptoms of the flu by taking the following measures:

If you have a fever, your body naturally loses a lot of fluid, especially through sweating. It is therefore important to drink a lot and often.

  • Preferably drink cold or hot liquids: water, milk, juice, broth.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages or caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and energy drinks. As these drink make you urinate, they increase loss of fluid.

In the absence of complications or risk factors, treatment of the flu requires no prescription medication. However, to relieve fever and pain, you may take over-the-counter medicine such as acetaminophen, Tylenol ® for example, and ibuprophen, Advil ® for example.

It is a contagious and infectious condition which often manifests itself as major pandemics, which may occur in any season interspersed with seasonal epidemics of varying severity.

Influenza is more prominent during the winter season. In winter, the immune system of the body is weak. As people usually stay indoors and are in close proximity to each other, it spreads quickly during winter.

Prognosis of Influenza

The prognosis of Influenza is more severe and lasts longer than ‘common cold’. Recovery period of flu is about one to two weeks. The person remains contagious for about six days from the date of infection.

Influenza leaves the respiratory epithelium weak and prone to several other infections and attack by other pathogens. Influenza can be life threatening when it develops into pneumonia. It may affect people of any age.

Types of Influenza

There are three types of influenza viruses, they are:

1) Type A influenza virus which generally affects the mammals and birds like ducks, chicken and in some cases human beings. There are three variants of Type A influenza viruses namely H1N1 (e.g swine flu), H1N2 (e.g Asian flu and Hongkong flu), and H1N3 viruses.

2) Type B flu virus that infects only humans. This causes mild fever and is less harmful than type A flu.

3) Type C flu which causes mild respiratory infections. virus C. The symptoms of Type C influenza infection resembles the symptoms of common cold and is not pandemic. This flu infects only humans.

Causes of influenza

Influenza is usually caused due to faulty eating habits (dietetic errors) and unhygienic living conditions, like stuffy rooms. Anxiety, overwork, Lack of exercise and faulty lifestyle also provide grounds for influenza infection. The flu virus spreads easily through the saliva droplets released in the air due to sneezing and coughing of the person infected by flu and can infect and weak person quickly.

The birth of influenza virus is closely associated with birds(Avian flu) and other animals (e.g swine flu). Thus Influenza pandemics often originate in places where human beings live in close proximity of animals.

Symptoms of Influenza
The symptoms of influenza are:

  • High fever (upto 40 ° C)
  • Chills and headache
  • Sore throat
  • Dry cough
  • Irritated eyes
  • Nasal congestion and Congestion of the lungs
  • Body aches including Muscle and joint pain
  • Wheezing
  • Fatigue
  • Pharyngitis

One cause of IBS: SIBO (Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

You may be happy to hear that there are a small group of medical doctors out there who don’t brush off IBS as a psychological condition.

In fact, they believe they’ve found the cause of IBS and the cure. Their theory is that IBS is caused by an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the small intestine. This condition is known as SIBO or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

The doctor leading the SIBO theory is Dr. Mark Pimentel. He wrote this book about it.

In the book, he addresses not only SIBO but also the relationship between female hormones, menstruation and IBS symptoms (it’s progesterone related) and why removing lactose can make your symptoms better.

He also discusses the relationship between IBS and symptoms of fibromyalgia and discusses related SIBO symptoms like depression, fatigue, yeast infections and interstitial cystitis.

A SIBO diagnosis means you have an overgrowth of bad bacteria in your small intestine. The problem is that most of the bacteria in your gut should be in the colon or large intestines, not in the small intestine. The primary job of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients and minerals from food.

A bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine causes the same issues as IBS (gas, bloating, gut pain, diarrhea or constipation). But it can also cause nausea, heartburn, brain fog, head aches, food allergies and body aches.

SIBO can be diagnosed with a breath test. The best test is a hydrogen/methane breath test. Before the test you drink a lactulose solution to determine if your are a hydrogen or methane gas producer.

You can also test for fructose, lactose or sorbitol sensitivity by drinking each substances before another breath test. SIBO expert and naturopath, Dr. Allison Siebecker, has more information about testing on her website.

This is where it gets a bit controversial. One of the common ways that SIBO is treated by doctors is with an antibiotic called Rifaximin or Neomycin. These particular antibiotics are used because they don’t absorb into the bloodstream and stay locally in the small intestine.

Studies show that these antibiotics have had great results in eradicating SIBO and improving symptoms. But you’re probably wondering, wasn’t it antibiotics that caused the problem in the first place?

Because many people are gun shy about taking antibiotics as a treatment, SIBO can also be treated with herbal antibiotics like oregano oil, garlic capsules, or goldenseal.

While antibiotics kill bad bacteria directly, diet is also used to starve the bad bacteria, which feed mostly on sugar and carbs.

There are two diets used for SIBO. The elemental diet is a two week long, predigested diet. Predigested food is broken down into powdered form and mixed with water so the body can skip the digestion step and easily absorb the nutrients.

The second way to starve the bad bugs is to choose a grain and sugar-free diet like the Specific Carbohydrate, GAPS or Paleo diet. I write all about these diets here.

Diet alone can be effective at healing SIBO but can be slow and take a long time.
