Fluish Feeling Meaning and Causes of Flu-Like Sensation

At times a person may feel unwell or is in discomfort without being able to identify any specific symptoms like nausea or pain. It is a generalized sensation that cannot be localized to a certain part of the body. This is commonly referred to as a fluish feeling or a flu-like feeling. The correct medical term for this sensation is malaise. The flu (seasonal influenza) is the most common recurrent ailment that humans experience throughout life. One of the main features of this viral infection is malaise which precedes the other symptoms and persists throughout the illness. Therefore it is only natural that most people describe malaise as feeling fluish or a flu-like sensation since they are very familiar with this sensation.

There is no specific explanation for malaise or the fluish feeling. It is a sensation that cannot be definitely measured and may vary from person to person. Although subjective, some features that may be noted includes:

  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Dizziness or lightheaded
  • Changes in blood pressure
  • Changes in heart rate
  • Changes in blood glucose
  • Changes in blood gas levels
  • Nausea
  • Irritability

The severity of these symptoms may vary from person to person and is also dependent on the underlying cause. However, it is important to note that a fluish feeling is not always due to the flu (influenza) or any related systemic infection. It may be experienced with a number of conditions like diabetes mellitus, heart attack, cancer or autoimmune diseases. Even in these instances, malaise may precede the onset of other more definitive symptoms.

Therefore a fluish feeling should not be taken as a sign of the upcoming flu particularly in a person who is at high risk of developing other conditions. This especially applies to people over the age of 40 years, who are obese, with a history of cigarette smoking and family history of ailments like heart attacks, stroke, diabetes and cancer. The elderly need to be particularly cautious with regards to a fluish feeling.

Malaise is a common symptom in a wide range of conditions. It may occur for a short period in acute diseases or acute flareups of chronic diseases. Sometimes malaise is persistent for much longer periods – even months and years.

Infections are one of the most common cause of the fluish feeling even when it is not the influenza virus involved. It is the systemic infections, most of which are viral, that are more likely to contribute to malaise.

  • Influenza – seasonal flu and H1N1 (swine flu)
  • Lyme disease
  • Rhinovirus infection (common cold)
  • Malaria
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Chronic viral hepatitis
  • Tuberculosis

There are various other systemic infections that cause cause malaise. The presence of a fever and swollen lymph nodes is a common indicator of an infection. Travelers to endemic areas, particularly in developing nations without proper vaccinations, should be cautious about malaise as it may be the first sign of an infection.

Any condition that compromises heart function will lead to malaise. This includes changes to heart rate and rhythm. Blood can therefore not be adequately re-oxygenated and distributed throughout the body as is usually the case. Vascular conditions are less likely to cause malaise.

Advice about avoiding sexual transmission of Zika virus can also be found on the following websites:

  • Low-grade fever
  • Arthralgia, notably of small joints of hands and feet, with possible swollen joints
  • Myalgia
  • Headache, retro-ocular headaches
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Cutaneous maculopapular rash

Zika virus infection usually causes a mild disease (with the exception of pregnant women). However, as Zika infection may cause a rash that could be confused with diseases such as measles or dengue, these serious diseases do need to be ruled out. Diagnosis of Zika will first and foremost be based on symptoms, travel history and exclusion of other diseases including measles, rubella and dengue.

The incubation period is typically 3–12 days. There is no specific therapy for Zika virus infection and acute symptoms typically resolve within 4–7 days. Use paracetamol for pain and fever if needed. Until dengue can be ruled out do not take aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, given the risk of bleeding.

Serious complications from Zika virus infection are uncommon. However, based on research to date, there is scientific consensus that Zika virus is a cause of microcephaly and other severe fetal brain abnormalities as well as Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Further information on Zika virus infection is available on the following websites:

What types of testing for Zika virus are available to test pregnant women?

Reverse-transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) can be used to detect the Zika virus during the first 1 week (in serum) to 2 weeks (in urine) of the illness.

Testing whole blood is a suitable alternative to serum, particularly in investigations during the first 2 weeks. After the first 2 weeks, advice from an infectious disease specialist or microbiologist should inform any PCR testing.

This RT-PCR test is currently performed in Wellington at ESR, Auckland at LabPLUS, and Christchurch at Canterbury Health Laboratories, with an expected turnaround time of 2 working days.

Serology is less reliable due to potential cross reaction with antibodies against other similar viruses (including dengue). This makes it difficult to differentiate Zika virus infection using antibody testing alone. Additionally, on 5 May 2017 the CDC issued a Health Alert Notice (HAN) sharing evidence that IgM antibodies may stay in the body for months after the infection, making it difficult to determine if a positive IgM antibody test on a pregnant woman reflects a recent infection or one acquired before the pregnancy. The HAN is available on the CDC website.

For these reasons, while a potentially valuable diagnostic tool Zika virus serology may be difficult to interpret and should involve a discussion with a microbiologist prior to testing.

Zika virus RT-PCR can also be performed on amniotic fluid, although it is not currently known how sensitive or specific this test is for congenital infection. The likelihood of an infected fetus developing a fetal abnormality is not known at this time.

Mosquito season is just around the corner, which means the U.S. and other countries are ramping up mosquito control in an attempt to contain the rapidly spreading Zika virus.

Travelers who return from a place where they may have been bitten by a mosquito carrying Zika, but do not have symptoms, can ask their doctor to be tested, but they will likely be low priority. Typically if a person does get sick, the symptoms will last for several days to a week.

The lungs of infected monkeys were destroyed in just days as their immune systems went into overdrive after a Canadian laboratory rebuilt the virus.

The reason for the lethal nature of the 1918 flu was never fully understood.

But the experts behind this test say they have found a human gene which may help explain its unusual virulence.

They are hoping to help control any future pandemic and believe that the strain may hold clues that will help them.

Despite the large number of casualties at the time, doctors had no way to preserve tissue samples taken from infected patients, so researchers used an ingenious method to overcome this.

The preserved body of a flu victim buried in Arctic permafrost was exhumed, and they painstakingly extracted the genetic material needed to work out the structure of the H1N1 virus.

Then, in a maximum "biosafety" facility at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory they reconstructed a fully functioning virus, and infected macaque monkeys to see what would happen.

Writing in the journal Nature, they reported that the results were startling. Symptoms appeared within 24 hours of exposure to the virus, and the subsequent destruction of lung tissue was so widespread that, had the monkeys not been killed a few days later, they would literally have drowned in their own blood.

Moderate exercise is also beneficial, if your strength allows. Sleep and freedom from stress is vital.

Sunshine and fresh air will also aid in detoxification.

A headache is the body’s chief warning signal of body toxicity. The toxic load in the body has increased so fast that poisons are circulating in the bloodstream and cause irritation to the brain and nerves.

Aspirin should never be taken for a headache. For some relief, lay down and rest with a cool, damp cloth across the eyes and forehead. Fasting may also help. Have someone massage the neck and temple. Avoid all stress at this time.

When food is not being digested properly or is passing right through your body, then it is time to stop all food intake. This is your body’s way of telling you it doesn’t require any nourishment at this time, but instead is busy cleaning.

Careful food combinations and avoiding heavy foods are advised.

Diarrhea should not be halted by medicines. Rest and abstinence from food are your best resorts.

A new diet may occasion temporary constipation. Brisk walking of at least one mile a day will help end this problem.

Eating foods naturally high in water and fiber will eventually remedy this condition. If little food is eaten, drink distilled water whenever thirsty.

On a diet of fruits and vegetables, constipation disappears, never to return.

Weight loss is entirely normal when the diet is improved. Some individuals become alarmed when their weight falls rapidly. In most cases, this is not a cause for alarm.

From five to fifteen pounds of water weight alone may be lost when salt is completely eliminated from the diet. In some individuals, five to twenty pounds of old fecal matter may be eliminated from the colon. All of this is useless weight, and you should say, “Good riddance!”

The body will also try to eliminate all diseased tissue in an effort to rebuild a healthy body. It will try to strip itself down to the bare foundations and then begin to add on only healthy tissue.

Weight loss may occur for six months to a year. Exercises for muscle growth, such as weight lifting and swimming, will help rebuild the body with lean, muscular tissue. Be sure that your diet includes sufficient amounts of sweet fruits that are high in calories to balance out the low-calorie salads.

Usually, you can expect to weigh about twenty pounds less after you renormalize your body from the typical high-meat and fat diet of most Americans.

Almost all the symptoms experienced during a dietary change are due to the body’s efforts to detoxify itself as rapidly as possible!

You can help in this process by fasting and getting plenty of rest. Be sure you get all the sleep you want and try to avoid stressful situations. During detoxification, you need as much peace and privacy as possible.

If this is all part of the withdrawl, I will deal with it as well as all the other withdrawal symptoms. But this one hell of a ride I never want to experience again.

I have been taking Lexapro for about 10 years because I have depression. my doctor wants me so stop taking it and put me on something else because I now have I also have P.D.S.D now. do you know if I will go crazy and bring my self to the edge of suicide like I was before I was taking it.

My primary care doctor started me on 10mg Lexapro. I had numerous side effects, which included an intense hot flash in the first week or so of taking the medicine. I also had 3 itchy welts form on my chest region, the doctor told me to stop taking the Lexapro after I told him about the itchy welts. I felt tingling and electric type shocking throughout my body. I couldn't sleep well at times, and had some very intense scary thoughts and heightened sensation to commit suicide. After noticing the itchy welts, I decided to stop the Lexapro. It made me feel the way I hoped it would a good bit of the time, but it was not worth all the other feelings it induced. I cut back to 5mg for the last week to taper myself off, knowing that was the best way to stop meds. I told my doctor about the itchy welts after I dropped to the 5mg the last week, that's when he told me to stop taking the Lexapro. I said (knowing I already had begun that process) should I quit slowly, he said no, stop it immediately. I am afraid to take any medications these days, I have trouble with the trusting, especially considering the precarious side effects. I hope this was helpful in some small way.

I was recently switched from Prozac to lexapro. About three months. My dr recently upped my dose from 10mg to 20mg even after I told him how itchy and restless I've become. I am covered in hives daily. Feel like I can't relax and constantly shake my leg or foot.. Thought I was just crazy until reading these posts! I have literally scratched my arms legs and hands raw. Grrrrrrrr!! And the dreams are the worst to boot. Now reading about the withdrawal symptoms scares me. Facing a lot in my life soon and really need the extra help, but not sure what to do now.

I was on lexapro for about a year. It really helped my anxiety but the downside was I gained 25 pounds. I was constantly eating when I was not hungry and craving sweets. I had no energy to do anything and would come home from work and by go to the sofa. I finally decided I couldn't gain anymore weight and discussed it with my Dr. He advised I wean off of it gradually. I was on 20mg and instead of taking it every day I took it every other day for 3 weeks. Then I dropped it to 10 mg every other day for a week. I was ok for about 5 days. Then I started crying over nothing and getting irritable. Then it got worse. I was blowing up screaming at my husband over things that would normally not bother me. Having temper fits, throwing things, or sobbing over the least little stress. I have a long commute to work and road rage was scary. After a week of this I went back to Dr.and he put me on low dose of Welbutrin to be increased after 2 weeks. After a few days I started to calm down some. After 10 days I still cry easily and get irritated with any little stress but I am able to control myself.

I took 10mg of lexapro for 7 years for panic attacks.Except for 13 pounds of weight gain I felt great.

Six month ago I decided wean of to loose the weight. No problem!

I lost my excess weight within 3 weeks and felt great without any side effects. That lasted 4 month and when my brother died 2 month ago my panic attacks came back worse than ever.

After weeks of misery I am back on lexapro and feel good again.

I guess I will take it for the rest of my live.

After becoming rather sick I visited an urgent care facility where the doctor, without notifying her of my past diagnosis of depression and GAD, prescribed me a prescription of a months worth of 20mg Lexapro. I am newish to the area and have a hard time actually sitting down and doing things like finding a primary care physician or psychiatrist so I have neither at the moment sadly. After finally finding a doctor the earliest they can get me in is July, needless to say I can barely function around people. I am an emotional mess, I constantly get dizzy and the frequency of the brain zaps is almost debilitating. I have almost been getting random numbness and a needle like sensation throughout my left side of my body. I also haven't slept well in the past week since the end of my prescription. If I had known I wouldn't have been able to find a doctor with earlier openings I wouldn't have started taking it. This is ridiculous and I can barely function at work due to the withdrawals symptoms, which have also put a strain on my relationships with my significant other as well as my roommates.

I have been taking Lexapro 20 mg for about 9 years. I began experiencing extreme irritability, anger and frustration. My doctor began weaning me off and adding Zoloft. That didn't work. Now my doctor is taking me down to 10 mg every day and 100 Wellbutrin. The ringing in my head is horrible. It hasn't stopped for 2 weeks. Has anyone else experienced this withdrawal symptom?

A medically supervised opiate withdrawal in a controlled environment can make the withdrawal much safer and more comfortable. It also provides a much a higher chance of success. In the past, opiate-dependent patients had no choice but to undergo conventional detoxification procedures in nonmedical facilities such as a drug rehab; It caused them to suffer through an unnecessary debilitating and sometimes even dangerous withdrawal syndrome.

For more information on Medical Opiate Withdrawal Treatment, Call Today 1-800-423-2482

Natural opiates are alkaloids found in the opium poppy plant, and examples are morphine, codeine, and thebaine. Semi-synthetic opioids are created from natural opiates and include oxycodone, hydrocodone, and hydromorphone. Fully synthetic opioids include fentanyl, methadone, and tramadol.

People who use opiates for the medical condition can also become physically dependent and require a medical opiate detox. One can take these medications safely over a relatively short period. However, most people become dependent when long-term therapy is needed. This is what makes pain management so tricky. Opiates are prized for their ability to defeat pain. Unfortunately, tolerance, dependence, and addiction can set in, even when the drugs are used correctly. Once this happens, the body needs more of the drug to experience the same effect. This increases the risk of a drug overdose.

Drug overdose is the leading cause of death in the United States. The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) reports that 100 people die of a drug overdose daily, and 46 people are due to prescription opioid overdose.

Many opioid withdrawal treatment programs, often rely on “replacement” or “substitution” medications such as methadone, Suboxone ( Buprenorphine) or Subutex. These medications are also opioids and may prolong the length of the opiate addiction. Eventually, people dependent on these drugs will require detoxification. For some, Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) might be safer than street drugs; for others, being completely opioid-free is the best option. Choosing the appropriate medical detox or the best rapid detox center can dictate the quality and efficiency of the opiate withdrawal treatment.

The Waismann Method ® of rapid detoxification has demonstrated tremendous success in getting patients comfortably and safely through opiate withdrawal. Recognized as the best opiate treatment center in the world, by offering exceptional medical care and individualized assessment.

Dealing With Yeast Die-Off Reactions

Many yeast sufferers, after starting a program for yeast control, have experienced a worsening of their condition. This can of course be a most unsettling and discouraging development and if not understood and addressed effectively, may not only forestall one's progress, but possibly bring it to a screeching halt. We therefore want to share our insights and strategies to minimize the chances of suffering unnecessarily from yeast die-off reactions.

Common yeast die-off symptoms, some individuals may develop one or several of these concurrently

Fatigue, brain fog, gastro-intestinal distress such as nausea, gas, bloating, diarrhea or constipation, low grade fever, headache, sore throat, body itch, muscle and / or joint soreness or pain, feeling as if coming down with a flu.

Be aware that contrary to popularly held misconception, yeast die-off reactions are not a sign that yeast treatment is succeeding. It is an indication that yeast cells are dying, usually in large numbers, and is more of an indicator of the system's toxic overload. More poisons are being released than the body can adequately cope with at one time. In most cases, yeast die-off is a sign that the system's eliminatory pathways are overburdened or as oftentimes happens, blocked, as in constipation and liver stress.

When properly undertaken, treatment for yeast related health problems does not lead to yeast die-off reactions.

Individuals with elevated heavy metal levels may have special problems with so called "yeast die-off reactions" more information

Strategies to minimize discomfort and shorten the duration of yeast die-off reactions

§ Reduce your intake of antifungal remedies temporarily. Some individuals may have to discontinue altogether for a few days.

§ More water should be consumed, we recommend 4-6 fluid ounces of warm or hot water every forty-five minutes, throughout the day.

§ It is imperative to rest when experiencing yeast die-off reactions, they will otherwise worsen in severity. Get to sleep as early as possible.

    2. Respiratory Symptoms

As the fever subsides, cough, runny nose and sore throat will become more common. In some cases, these symptoms can become worse, eventually developing into pneumonia or bronchitis if the symptoms are not treated. In most cases, respiratory symptoms will disappear after a week, though it is possible for the cough to last for several weeks.

    3. Stomach Symptoms

Many strains of the condition will cause irritation in the stomach. Because this is so common, this particular type of flue is often referred to as a stomach flu though the virus does not specifically affect the stomach. Stomach symptoms include nausea, loss of appetite or vomiting.

    • Bacterial pneumonia. Pneumonia is one of the most common complications that stems from an infection. This virus damages the lungs which can restrict the airways and increase the risk of developing an additional bacterial infection, including pneumonia. Pneumonia is caused by bacteria increasing rapidly in the airways, causing fluid retention, inflammation and swelling of the lungs' air sacs. If the lungs start to fill with fluid, it can make it hard to breath, causing shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing and fever. This is a serious concern for those with chronic illnesses or elderly people.
    • Encephalitis. This is a rare condition that is caused by the brain becoming inflamed due to exposure to the influenza virus. This condition is signaled by headaches and fever which will develop into confusion, drowsiness, seizures, loss of consciousness or coma.
    • Myositis. Myositis largely impacts children, causing muscle inflammation or tenderness in the legs. This inflammation can make it difficult to move or lead to muscle weakness as well. These symptoms typically last around 1-5 days.
    • Reye's syndrome. Some children and adolescents can develop this neurological disease that causes delirium, nausea, vomiting or confusion. In some cases, this syndrome is caused by taking aspirin to help manage influenza symptoms like fever. Talk to your doctor before giving aspirin to an underage patient to make sure it is safe.
    • Others. In addition to causing more serious complications, the respiratory symptoms associated with this virus may cause bronchitis, sinus infections or ear infections.

    Medical Treatments

In most cases, there is no need to administer medication to those suffering from the flu. If necessary, antiviral medications such as zanamivir or oseltamivir can be administered to help shorten the duration of the illness or to lower the risk of additional complications developing. Oseltamivir is taken orally and zanamivir is administered with an inhaler like you would use asthma medication. These medications can cause side effects including vomiting. Oseltamivir increases the risk of self-harm or delirium in teenagers.

    Home Remedies

    • Fluids. Drinking plenty of beverages like juice, water and warm soup can help prevent dehydration when suffering from the flu. Make sure you drink enough to keep your urine a pale yellow color.
    • Rest. Make sure you get plenty of sleep to encourage your immune system to fight the infection.
    • OTC pain killers. Pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage the body aches associated with the flu. Aspirin should not be given to teens or children as this increases their risk of Reye's syndrome.

    Preventions

    • Flu vaccine. Every year a new flu vaccine is developed that contains the antibodies for the strains of flu anticipated to be prominent that season. These vaccines are commonly administered as a nasal spray or injection.
    • Avoiding spreading virus. While there is no way to completely prevent the flu, there are steps you can take to prevent spreading it to others. Wash your hands, scrubbing them for 15 seconds to rid your skin of traces of the virus. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is also helpful in keeping the skin clean. Cover the mouth and nose when you sneeze, but use a tissue or the inner portion of the arm instead of your hand to avoid getting the virus on your hands where it can be spread. Try to avoid crowded areas like public transportation, child care centers or office buildings during the peak of flu season to avoid coming in contact with the virus.

Symptoms of Swine Flu - Know the Difference Between H1N1 Flu and Regular Flu

    By Arunraj V.S. | Submitted On August 12, 2009

Swine Flu is a number one health concern the world over. The HI1N1 flu or Swine Flu was first detected in US in April 2009. The worst affected areas initially were Canada and Mexico before H1N1 flu cases began to emerge in other areas of the world. In a short span of four months, the disease has spread to almost all regions in the world. World Health Organization has called H1N1 as pandemic which means a big epidemic that involves the entire country or perhaps the world. Usually, the signs of a pandemic are when a virus without any immunity to stop it, spreads across various parts of the world.

    Risk factors of Swine Flu
Swine Flu spreads from person to person in the same way as regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. People with high risk for seasonal flu are also at high risk for H1N1 flu. For example, people above 65 years of age, pregnant women, children below 5 years of age and those with chronic medical conditions and lifestyle diseases like diabetes are at high risk.

    Symptoms of Swine Flu
In children, the symptoms of H1N1 virus include:
    1. Rapid Breathing or Difficulty in breathing.
    2. Grayish or Bluish Skin Color
    3. Dehydration
    4. Persistent of severe vomiting
    5. Not able to interact properly with people, become irritable
    6. Flu like symptoms, bad cough and fever

In adults, the symptoms of swine flu include:
    1. Shortness of breath or difficulty in breathing
    2. Pain in chest or abdomen
    3. Sudden dizziness or loss of energy
    4. Severe or continuous vomiting
    6. Flu like symptoms, bad cough and fever

“It’s possible this might be a flu season where we’ll see people get more ill, which causes people to require hospitalizations versus riding out the flu at home,” he said.

This year’s flu vaccine isn’t “optimally matched” to protect against H3N2 either, the federal agency warned.

Scientists look at the patterns and make their predictions based on what viruses made their rounds below us and estimate what mutations could occur before the influenzas make their way over the equator.

Picking out three strains for a vaccine is guesswork, and by the time influenza makes its way into the northern hemisphere, it’s had time to mutate or “drift.” But by then, the flu vaccine is already formulated.

WATCH: The flu is hitting the US in full force. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports almost all states have widespread flu activity and most of the flu out there is from a virus that’s not matched to the vaccine.

This year, the vaccine isn’t as effective but health officials say it’s still worthwhile to roll up your sleeve and get the shot.

While it may not protect against this one strain of the flu, it’ll still fight against other strains floating around. It’ll also lessen the risk of complications.

“Though reduced, the cross-protection might reduce the likelihood of severe outcomes such as hospitalization and death,” the CDC advisory said to American doctors when it discovered the mismatch.
