5) @Steamland-- The question itself is a very judgmental and prejudiced. What makes you think that all pandemic diseases come from Asia? They emerge in other areas of the world all the time. Take Ebola, which emerged in Africa.

The only difference is that in countries where health care systems are very developed, these instances are diagnosed and quarantined much faster. So the chances of the pandemic spreading is reduced and it's usually eliminated altogether this way.

4) @donasmrs-- They are not the same but they mutated from the same virus. They are subtypes of what is called influenza A. Asian flu is H2N2 as the article said and Avian flu is H5N1. They start out in wild birds and sometimes, they infect humans and become an epidemic. There are other types of influenza A that affect other animals like pigs (aka swine flu). But most flu viruses in this category exist in birds, fewer amount affect pigs and humans.

Yes, these viruses change and adapt all the time. That's they're survival mechanism. They're constantly mutating, evolving, taking on new names and jumping from one animal to the next.

3) What about the bird flu that showed up in various parts of the world in 2006 and 2007? Was it the same as Asian flue or was it a slightly different strain of the virus? Does the virus keep changing?

2) @Steamland, as far as we know there are two reasons for this. One is just probability. Asia contains a huge portion of the world's population and is a massive part of the geographic world. People sometimes refer to Asia like it's a single country but about a third of the world is classified as Asia. Add in more than half the world's population and it makes sense than many of the worlds diseases would originate there. Also to blame is the developing nature of many regions within Asia. Not only do billions of people live relatively close together, some live close together in poor hygienic conditions with little access to proper sanitation and clean water. Compound this with the fact that a portion of these people live in close contact with farm animals. Farm animals, like ducks, chickens and pigs are usually the original hosts from which many new diseases mutate and make the jump to humans. Not only that but often these farm animals live in close proximity with each other which can promote mutation conditions in certain viruses and bacteria.

1) Why do all of these horrible pandemic diseases seem to come from Asia? Why don't they originate in places like America?

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Flu epidemic. The CDC released new numbers Monday showing the flu is widespread in most of the country, including here in Maryland—and doctors say this strain can be more dangerous.

Meghan McCorkell has more on how local hospitals are handling a surge of cases.

Hospitals in Maryland say they have been slammed with flu patients since Christmas.

The flu turned deadly in the United States with 21 children dying this season. One of the latest was seven-year-old Ruby Hanson, whose parents say she may have survived if it weren’t for a pre-existing condition.

“She had a seizure that was caused by the flu,” said Debra Hanson, her mother.

The CDC now reports 43 states, including Maryland, are experiencing high or widespread flu activity. Much of that is the H3N2 strain of Influenza A.

“We do know that in years where this virus circulates, or this type of virus circulates, we do get more deaths on average than the usual year,” said Dr. Joseph Cresee, Centers for Disease Control.

Emergency rooms across the state are now reporting thousands of patients coming in with flu-like symptoms every week.

“This is one of the busier flu years,” said Dr. Lisa Kirkland, Sinai Hospital.

Dr. Kirkland says some of the patients she is seeing thought they were protected because they got a flu shot.

“This year, the flu strain mutated a little bit and there is one component of the flu strain that is causing the flu in people who actually did get the shot,” she said.

Several local hospitals are now limiting visitors to try and stop the spread of the flu. At the University of Maryland Medical Center, no visitors under the age of 18 will be allowed in the hospital, only two adult visitors can see a patient at one time and visitors experiencing flu symptoms are not permitted.

Flu season normally lasts through February and March.

The lungs of infected monkeys were destroyed in just days as their immune systems went into overdrive after a Canadian laboratory rebuilt the virus.

The reason for the lethal nature of the 1918 flu was never fully understood.

But the experts behind this test say they have found a human gene which may help explain its unusual virulence.

They are hoping to help control any future pandemic and believe that the strain may hold clues that will help them.

Despite the large number of casualties at the time, doctors had no way to preserve tissue samples taken from infected patients, so researchers used an ingenious method to overcome this.

The preserved body of a flu victim buried in Arctic permafrost was exhumed, and they painstakingly extracted the genetic material needed to work out the structure of the H1N1 virus.

Then, in a maximum "biosafety" facility at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory they reconstructed a fully functioning virus, and infected macaque monkeys to see what would happen.

Writing in the journal Nature, they reported that the results were startling. Symptoms appeared within 24 hours of exposure to the virus, and the subsequent destruction of lung tissue was so widespread that, had the monkeys not been killed a few days later, they would literally have drowned in their own blood.

What is the prognosis for patients who get the flu? What are possible complications of the flu?

In general, the majority (about 90%-95%) of people who get the disease feel terrible (see symptoms) but recover with no problems. People with suppressed immune systems historically have worse outcomes than uncompromised individuals; current data suggest that pregnant individuals, children under 2 years of age, young adults, and individuals with any immune compromise or debilitation are likely to have a worse prognosis. Complications from the flu may worsen medical conditions such as asthma, congestive heart failure, and diabetes. Other complications may include ear infections, sinus infections, dehydration, pneumonia, and even death. In most outbreaks, epidemics, and pandemics, the mortality rates are highest in the older population (usually above 50 years old). Complications of any flu virus infection, although relatively rare, may resemble severe viral pneumonia or the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome caused by a coronavirus strain) outbreak in 2002-2003, in which the disease spread to about 10 countries with over 7,000 cases, over 700 deaths, and had a 10% mortality rate. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare immune disorder that can result in weakness or paralysis, may occur after having the flu or very rarely, after vaccination against the flu (estimated by the CDC to be about one person per every million people vaccinated).

Yes. However, associated deaths per year depend upon the virulence of the particular strain of virus that is circulating. That means for any given year, the likelihood of dying from the flu varies according to the specific infecting viruses. For example, from 1976-2007 (the most reliable available data according to the CDC), deaths associated with the flu range from a low of about 3,000 per year to a high of about 49,000 per year. The CDC estimates about 36,000 deaths/year in the U.S. in recent years. The 1918 flu pandemic (1918-1919) was estimated to cause 20-50 million deaths worldwide.

The bird flu, also known as avian influenza and H5N1, is an infection caused by avian influenza A. Bird flu can infect many bird species, including domesticated birds such as chickens. In most cases, the disease is mild; however, some subtypes can be pathogenic and rapidly kill birds within 48 hours. Rarely, humans can be infected by these bird viruses. People who get infected with bird flu usually have direct contact with the infected birds or their waste products. Depending on the viral type, the infections can range from mild influenza to severe respiratory problems or death. Human infection with bird flu is rare but frequently fatal. More than half of those people infected (over 650 infected people) have died (current estimates of the mortality [death] rates in humans is about 60%). Fortunately, this virus does not seem to be easily passed from person to person. The major concern among scientists and physicians about bird flu is that it will change (mutate) its viral RNA enough to be easily transferred among people and produce a pandemic similar to the one of 1918. There have been several isolated instances where a person had been reported to get avian flu in 2010; the virus was detected in South Korea (three human cases), resulting in a quarantine of two farms, and in 2012, over 10,000 turkeys died in a H5N1 outbreak with no human infections recorded. Recent research suggests that some people may have had exposure to H5N1 in their past but had either mild or no symptoms.

In addition, researchers, in an effort to understand what makes an animal or bird flu become easily transmissible to humans, developed a bird flu strain that is likely easily transmitted from person to person. Although it exists only in research labs, there is controversy about both the synthesis and the scientific publication of how this potentially highly pathogenic strain was created.

Vaccination is the primary method for control of influenza; however, antiviral agents have a role in the prevention and treatment of mainly influenza type A infection. Regardless, antiviral agents should not be considered as a substitute or alternative for vaccination. Most effectiveness of these drugs are reported to occur if the antivirals are given within the first 48 hours after infection; some researchers maintain there is little or no solid evidence these drugs can protect people from getting the flu so some controversies exist regarding these agents.

Is it safe to get a flu shot that contains thimerosal?

Thimerosal is a preservative that contains mercury and is used in multidose vials of conventional flu vaccines to prevent contamination when the vial is repeatedly used to extract the vaccine. Although thimerosal is being phased out as a vaccine preservative, it is still used in flu vaccines in low levels. There is no data that indicates thimerosal in these vaccines has caused autism or other problems in individuals. However, flu vaccine that is produced for single use (not a multidose vial) contains no thimerosal; however, these vials are not as readily available to doctors and likely cost more to produce. Consequently, the FDA has published these two questions with clear answers that are quoted below:

"Is it safe for children to receive an influenza vaccine that contains thimerosal?"
"Yes. There is no convincing evidence of harm caused by the small doses of thimerosal preservative in influenza vaccines, except for minor effects like swelling and redness at the injection site."

However, as stated above, the FDA goes on to say that single-dose vial of conventional and other flu vaccines will not contain the preservative thimerosal, so that if a person wants to avoid the thimerosal, they can ask for vaccine that comes in a single-dose vial. The nasal spray vaccine contains no thimerosal, but it is not recommended for use in pregnant women. The CDC further states, that after numerous studies, there is no established link between flu shots with or without thimerosal and autism.

Where can people find additional information about the flu?

During a flu pandemic, guidelines and situations can change rapidly. People are advised to be aware that several sources are available to them to keep current with developments. The web sites below are frequently updated, especially when a pandemic is declared. The first web site contains an update written for the public and caregivers; the government and WHO sites provide detailed information that are updated as guidelines and developments occur.

Influenza A (H3N3)

Seasonal Human Virus

By Jeffrey Thornton

Influenza (Flu) Virus; Etiology agent (Orthomxoviridae)

The influenza virus is transmitted by respiratory droplets, body fluids such as Saliva, nasal secretions, and blood, or an contaminated surfaces. When an infected person coughs and or sneezes, tiny particles of liquid are released into the air called (aerosols), which contain the influenza virus (2). Another method of transmission is birds. This virus is transmitted by these wild birds typically when a person comes in contact with the bird feces. (2)

Influenza A (H5N1)- also called “H5N1 virus” –is an influenza A virus is a considered a subgroup that occurs in birds, it is highly contagious among birds, and can also be very deadly to them as well (10). However, this virus does not usually infect humans, but infections have occurred. The majority of these cases have resulted from direct contact with the H5N1-infected poultry or a contaminated surface. (2)

The hypothesis is that the wild aquatic are considered the first reservoir of all influenza viruses for avian and mammalian species. Transmission of influenza has been discovered between pigs and humans (swine flu). There is some evidence for transmission between wild ducks and other species, and the five different host groups are based on phylogenetic analysis of the nucleoproteins of a large number of different influenza viruses. (From Fields Virology, 4 th ed., Knipe & Howley, eds, Lippincott Williams &

Willkins, 2001, Fig. 47-3)

General Characteristics of MO:

Influenza virus (Orthomxoviridae) consists of spherical particles with an average diameter of 80 to 120 nm (8). A flu virus is roughly round, but it can also be elongated or irregularly shaped. Inside are eight segments of single-strand RNA containing the genetic instructions for making new copies of the virus. Flu's most striking feature is a layer of spikes projecting from its surface. There are two different types of spikes: one is the protein hemagglutinin (HA), which allows the virus to "stick" to a cell and initiate infection, the other is a protein called neuraminidase (NA), which enables newly formed viruses to exit the host cell. (7)

There are so many different combinations of the influenza virus the subtypes differ because of the proteins in the surface of the influenza A virus (hemagglutinin [HA] and neuraminidase [NA] proteins) (10). There are 16 known HA subtypes and 9 known NA subtypes and 9 known NA subtypes of influenza A viruses (10). Each combination represents a different subtype. All known subtypes of influenza A can be found on birds.

Twin flame signs and symptoms – no matter how brief or how seemingly meaningless an encounter with another person, you must realize, there is no such thing as coincidence. Often this experience will unfold opportunities, explorations, and self-introspection. If you don’t just shuck it away or file it as some blip on the screen and start to discover there really is something there, you may also find yourself awakening to a new level of meaning and synchronicity.

Here are some twin flame signs and symptoms that you may have just experienced a meeting with your twin flame or twin soul.

Another example of non-contagious food poisoning recently happened to a friend and her husband after having dinner at a restaurant. They had different meals but they both got the same house salad (lettuce, eggs, tomato, cheese, croutons, cucumbers, and creamy Italian dressing). My friend went to bed at 9:30pm and thought her stomach felt odd but she fell asleep anyway. She woke up at 10:15pm and had to run to the toilet to vomit. She had 1 violent episode of vomiting and then felt okay. She slept the rest of the night. She was perfectly fine the next day. This seems like a case of non-contagious food poisoning because it came on so quickly after the meal and was over quickly. Although it is possible to vomit just 1 time from a stomach flu virus, they usually don't end that quickly. Her husband had a different story. He had a stomachache after dinner just like she did. However, he did not vomit. He had a stomachache for the next 2 days and then had diarrhea for the following 3 days. He wasn't right for a week. If I was just looking at his symptoms, I'd say that he probably has something contagious. However, since his wife most definitely has the non-contagious form, and they both felt sick at the same time, I would blame it on a bad salad. This example shows us that even the same bad food can affect people differently. I know throwing up is scary but when you eat something bad, it is probably the fastest way to feel better. My friend's husband didn't throw up and kept the bad stuff in. He was sick all week.

The signs or symptoms of leukemia may vary depending on whether you have an acute or chronic type of leukemia.

Acute leukemia may cause signs and symptoms that are similar to the flu. They come on suddenly within days or weeks.

Chronic leukemia often causes only a few symptoms or none at all. Signs and symptoms usually develop gradually. People with a chronic leukemia often complain that they just do not feel well. The disease is often found during a routine blood test.

Other health conditions can cause the same symptoms as leukemia. See your doctor if you have:

  • fatigue
  • a general feeling of discomfort or illness (called malaise)
  • loss of appetite
  • weight loss
  • fever
  • shortness of breath
  • paleness
  • rapid heartbeat (called palpitations)
  • weakness
  • dizziness
  • easy bruising
  • frequent or severe nose bleeds
  • bleeding gums
  • bleeding in the middle of a menstrual cycle or heavy menstrual flow
  • tiny, flat, red spots caused by bleeding just under the surface of the skin (called petechiae)
  • frequent infections in the lungs, urinary tract or gums or around the anus
  • frequent cold sores
  • vomiting
  • headache
  • sore throat
  • night sweats
  • bone or joint pain
  • enlarged lymph nodes in the neck, underarm, groin or above the collarbone
  • abdominal discomfort or feeling of fullness
  • vision problems
  • sores in the eyes
  • swelling of the testicles
  • chloroma – a collection of leukemia cells, or blasts, under the skin or in other parts of the body
  • leukemia cutis – appears as sores or as patches of any size that are usually pink or tan in colour
  • leukocytoclastic vasculitis – a condition that looks like an allergic reaction on the skin and usually causes sores on the hands and feet
  • Sweet’s syndrome, or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis – causes fever and painful sores that may appear anywhere on the body

In some cases, leukemia or its treatments can cause serious problems. These cancer-related emergencies need to be treated right away.

Tumour lysis syndrome can occur when chemotherapy is given to treat acute leukemia, but the cancer cells die quickly and the kidneys can’t remove the substances they release from the blood fast enough. Find out more about tumour lysis syndrome.

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) may occur when too many leukemia cells develop in the thymus, causing it to get bigger and block the windpipe. SVCS may develop with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Find out more about superior vena cava syndrome.

my hair is always falling out, i have low energy levels, low libido, major mood swings and I'm not even ovulating! Guess the next step is some medication to get me back on track! Hang in there girls!

12) i am also having same problems - depression, mood swings, loss of hair, weight gain. In my case I have developed dermoid and endometrium thickness, PCOD. Even after consulting two or three doctors and taking medicines for one year, things did not improve. Now I have switched to homeopathy and is finding some improvement. As it's just one month since I started taking medicines, I am hoping for some positive results.

11) My first pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage. The doctor monitored my levels with second pregnancy to keep from miscarrying. I also had to take the progesterone with my third pregnancy because levels were actually lower than the doctor wanted.

I now have diabetes and hypothyroidism and after reading the above info I am wondering if my progesterone has something to do with those two health issues.

I have issues that really bring me to a conclusion of PMDD. I am going to make an appointment with my doctor to see if the progesterone has anything to do with my diabetes and hypothyroidism as well as needing to find some help with the symptoms that coincide with PMDD as they are ruining my life!

10) Same case with me. i used to have so much tension and I always had bad moods. I have started taking medicines since last week but still i don't feel much change.

9) I am in the process of being testing for low hormone levels and thyroid dysfunction because, quite tragically, I've lost at least half of my hair in one month! I'm only 32 and feel like I'm having a nightmare!

I tell myself things could be much worse, but dealing with hair drastically, severely, suddenly falling out everywhere is emotionally exhausting. Has anyone else had this? What do I do?

8) I had all these symptoms of depression: panic attacks, hot flashes, insomnia, fuzzy thinking, and I was tired of seeing doctors and them not helping me with my problems.

So they recommended to me this female doctor and she tested my levels of progesterone and i was very low, so now she is treating me my progesterone. I feel a little better now. I have been treated for three months now but I know this medication is going to help me.

7) Because male doctors are often not attuned to female symptoms or concerns. The best help might come from a specialist in bioidentical hormones.

I went to a female specialist who knows exactly the issues women face in menopause and has reversed these to good results with both men and women.

Seek beyond the standard help and you will get better, healthier results. Often the conservative male doctor just wants to put you on depression meds and chemical manufactured hormones. Don't do it!

6) I stopped taking the pill so we could get pregnant and it threw my body off and my periods are not regular, so my doctor did a blood test and said my progesterone levels are very low! Yea! Finally I have a answer. I have a lot of these symptoms and can't wait to feel normal again!

5) Women who have low levels of progesterone often have infertility problems and when they do conceive, they are at a higher risk for miscarriage. You may have low progesterone levels if you have any of these symptoms.

4) We finally tested my levels. I barely produce progesterone. Depression, practically no libido, metabolic basal rate that is lower than normal, hair loss (scalp and eyebrows), mental fog.

Salt elimination may also cause a temporary rise in blood pressure. People who go on salt-free diets may actually experience a slight increase in their blood pressure as the heavy elimination of salt begins. Later the blood pressure renormalizes itself and eventually becomes below the norm on a salt-free diet.

Eliminating sugar from the diet may make a person feel slightly nervous and hyperactive until the energy levels adjust to a sugar-free diet.

Mood changes, however, are usually more noticeable than any physical symptoms when sugar is eliminated. Reformed sugar addicts may feel periods of unaccountable depression as their blood sugar level tries to right itself. Getting off the sugar roller coaster, with its rapid rises and falls in blood sugar levels, is easier when a diet high in raw foods is followed. Such a diet renormalizes blood sugar levels and promotes tranquility of emotions.

Almost every person is poisoned by deposits of heavy metals in the body. Lead, aluminum, copper and arsenic collect in organs throughout the body. Because of their heavy weight, they are difficult to eliminate, and may cause discomfort as they leave the body.

Lead enters the body through auto exhaust, paints and canned foods. Aluminum may come from preparing or storing food in aluminum containers. Arsenic is present on sprayed foods, and so on.

Since these metals are heavy, they, tend to remain in the body until a cleansing diet or fast is followed. As these metals come out, headaches and a general achiness all through the body may occur. The gums may hurt and the kidneys may throb as these metals leave the organs and bones.

Occasionally, you can actually taste the metal that is being eliminated. Lead, especially often leaves a metallic taste on the tongue when it is leaving the body.

Heavy-metal poisoning can make you feel uncomfortable all over, and it is very common due to all the environmental toxins. As you eliminate these metals, bear the uncomfortable body aches and realize that they are leaving your body forever.

Meat-eating creates an acid condition in the body. When meat is eliminated, the body tries to reestablish its naturally-healthy, alkaline condition. As the acid condition of the body changes to one of alkalinity, symptoms may arise that may confuse the new vegetarian.

A sour, disagreeable odor may emit from the body as the acids leave or are neutralized. Hair may fall out and the breath may turn foul. Urine may be very dark and a sharp, bitter taste may be in the mouth.

Weakness of the arms and legs may occur. Many people contuse this weakness for protein deficiency. Instead, the weakness has resulted from a consumption of too much acid-forming protein in the past. The body’s energies are directed toward neutralizing these old toxins and so you may feel weak for a temporary period. Once the toxins are taken care of and an alkaline condition is reestablished, then strength returns to the limbs.

The discomfort of an over-acid body caused by meat-eating can be quickly overcome by a high-alkaline diet, such as fresh fruits and vegetables.

Most people who change their diet and improve their health may experience one or more of the symptoms described below. Depending upon your past health, these symptoms may be mild or intense, short-term or long-term, temporary or recurrent.

As you improve your health, however, and stay on an optimum diet, all symptoms will gradually disappear.

Under no circumstances should these symptoms be halted by drugs.

Relief from some of these symptoms may come through fasting and rest primarily.

Of course, just because you experience some of these symptoms does not guarantee that you do have an intestinal parasite. You may just have a dreadful diet, and now you are paying for it.

I've found, though, that if you experience these symptoms chronically, you need a good colon cleaning whether it is harboring parasites or not!

We really aren't meant to live in discomfort like that. And honestly, if you let these things go, they don't just go away. You usually end up with far greater digestive problems and even some painful and serious conditions.

As a result of chronic parasitic infections, people have suffered with.

    • irritable bowel syndrome
    • ulcerative colitis
    • allergy problems
    • inflammation
    • joint pain
    • chronic fatigue
    • immune disorders, possibly even AIDS

After dealing with the parasites and getting them out of their system, their symptoms were gone, too. Remember the little "mimics?" Your situation may not be as serious as you fear.

I freely admit that I am not a doctor. However, I'm the type who would rather take the simple and natural steps first to try to fix a problem. When all else fails, then I consider drastic measures!:-)

Why? Take several weeks and apply a few good principles of colon cleansing and healthy eating to your life. You may surprise yourself by the results. And the wonderful thing about a natural cleanse is that it is relatively inexpensive and you won't have to worry about damaging chemical side effects.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine Products. Some of these products may help prevent colds if taken regularly. Probiotics, such as Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, alone or combined with Bifidobacterium animalis, taken by healthy children during the winter may reduce day care absences; the incidence of fever, cough, and rhinorrhea; and the use of antibiotics.22

A Cochrane review showed a 13 percent decrease in cold symptoms in children who took 1 g of vitamin C daily before illness, although optimal duration of treatment to achieve these benefits is unknown.14 Zinc sulfate used prophylactically for at least five months reduces the incidence of viral colds, absences from school, and antibiotic use in children.20

The herbal preparation Chizukit contains 50 mg per mL of Echinacea, 50 mg per mL of propolis, and 10 mg per mL of vitamin C.21 In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 430 children one to five years of age, Chizukit decreased the number of cold episodes, the number of days the child was ill, and the number of days the child missed school. It also decreased the need for antipyretics and antibiotics; physician visits; and episodes of otitis media, pneumonia, and tonsillitis. However, children may not comply with taking the product because of its unpleasant taste.21

Nasal Saline Irrigation. Nasal irrigation with saline as a preventive measure in children is better than standard treatment for multiple cold symptoms. Overall, the treatment decreases illness and nasal secretions, improving nasal breathing. These children also use fewer antipyretics, nasal decongestants, and mucolytics and have fewer school absences.17
