Symptoms of Typhoid Fever: Cure, Causes and Treatment of Typhoid

Typhoid Fever is characterized by typical course of temperature and ulceration of the bowels. The fever is of uncertain duration and is infectious.

  • The patient feels weak, cold and tired.
  • Headache, backache, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite are other symptoms.
  • Temperature rises and remains high for about 10-14 days. Body temperature typically rises in the evening and drops in the morning.
  • Skin eruptions appear, tongue becomes dry and gets white patches in the center, which causes oily taste in mouth and inflamed bones.
  • Fever comes down gradually by the end of fourth week.
  • Poor sanitation, contaminated water and infected milk are some of the main factors responsible for typhoid.
  • Flies contaminate the food with germs. People carrying the germs can also spread the disease if they prepare or serve food.
  • Wrong dietary habits and faulty lifestyle lead to accumulation of toxic waste in the body and promotes typhoid fever.
  • Typhoid is common in people who eat more meat and meat products.
  • Complete bed rest is essential.
  • Patient should be kept on a liquid diet of orange, barley juice and milk. Orange juice, especially, hastens recovery as it increases energy, promotes body immunity and increases urinary output.

Implementation of anti-fly measures, proper disposal of sewage, boiling or thorough purification of drinking water and pasteurization of milk are some of the preventive measures.

Typhoid Fever Questions and Answers

Just wondering if your neck pain went away? I was only on 10mg of lexapro for 7 weeks, and now have neck and shoulder stiffness with being on this drug and coming off of it.

To Denice and others with neck pain.

I am so happy someone finally mentioned the neck pain! I am being weaned off Lexapro, too. I also have fibromyalgia.. I always thought the Lexapro helped me control my fibro pain as much as helped with depression. As I am discontining the Lexapro, my fibro pain has increased. BUT now I also have a severe "pins and needles" neck pain, almost like a herniated disc. Is this the type pain you are speaking of?

If this is all part of the withdrawl, I will deal with it as well as all the other withdrawal symptoms. But this one hell of a ride I never want to experience again.

I have been taking Lexapro for about 10 years because I have depression. my doctor wants me so stop taking it and put me on something else because I now have I also have P.D.S.D now. do you know if I will go crazy and bring my self to the edge of suicide like I was before I was taking it.

My primary care doctor started me on 10mg Lexapro. I had numerous side effects, which included an intense hot flash in the first week or so of taking the medicine. I also had 3 itchy welts form on my chest region, the doctor told me to stop taking the Lexapro after I told him about the itchy welts. I felt tingling and electric type shocking throughout my body. I couldn't sleep well at times, and had some very intense scary thoughts and heightened sensation to commit suicide. After noticing the itchy welts, I decided to stop the Lexapro. It made me feel the way I hoped it would a good bit of the time, but it was not worth all the other feelings it induced. I cut back to 5mg for the last week to taper myself off, knowing that was the best way to stop meds. I told my doctor about the itchy welts after I dropped to the 5mg the last week, that's when he told me to stop taking the Lexapro. I said (knowing I already had begun that process) should I quit slowly, he said no, stop it immediately. I am afraid to take any medications these days, I have trouble with the trusting, especially considering the precarious side effects. I hope this was helpful in some small way.

I was recently switched from Prozac to lexapro. About three months. My dr recently upped my dose from 10mg to 20mg even after I told him how itchy and restless I've become. I am covered in hives daily. Feel like I can't relax and constantly shake my leg or foot.. Thought I was just crazy until reading these posts! I have literally scratched my arms legs and hands raw. Grrrrrrrr!! And the dreams are the worst to boot. Now reading about the withdrawal symptoms scares me. Facing a lot in my life soon and really need the extra help, but not sure what to do now.

I was on lexapro for about a year. It really helped my anxiety but the downside was I gained 25 pounds. I was constantly eating when I was not hungry and craving sweets. I had no energy to do anything and would come home from work and by go to the sofa. I finally decided I couldn't gain anymore weight and discussed it with my Dr. He advised I wean off of it gradually. I was on 20mg and instead of taking it every day I took it every other day for 3 weeks. Then I dropped it to 10 mg every other day for a week. I was ok for about 5 days. Then I started crying over nothing and getting irritable. Then it got worse. I was blowing up screaming at my husband over things that would normally not bother me. Having temper fits, throwing things, or sobbing over the least little stress. I have a long commute to work and road rage was scary. After a week of this I went back to Dr.and he put me on low dose of Welbutrin to be increased after 2 weeks. After a few days I started to calm down some. After 10 days I still cry easily and get irritated with any little stress but I am able to control myself.

I took 10mg of lexapro for 7 years for panic attacks.Except for 13 pounds of weight gain I felt great.

Six month ago I decided wean of to loose the weight. No problem!

I lost my excess weight within 3 weeks and felt great without any side effects. That lasted 4 month and when my brother died 2 month ago my panic attacks came back worse than ever.

After weeks of misery I am back on lexapro and feel good again.

I guess I will take it for the rest of my live.

After becoming rather sick I visited an urgent care facility where the doctor, without notifying her of my past diagnosis of depression and GAD, prescribed me a prescription of a months worth of 20mg Lexapro. I am newish to the area and have a hard time actually sitting down and doing things like finding a primary care physician or psychiatrist so I have neither at the moment sadly. After finally finding a doctor the earliest they can get me in is July, needless to say I can barely function around people. I am an emotional mess, I constantly get dizzy and the frequency of the brain zaps is almost debilitating. I have almost been getting random numbness and a needle like sensation throughout my left side of my body. I also haven't slept well in the past week since the end of my prescription. If I had known I wouldn't have been able to find a doctor with earlier openings I wouldn't have started taking it. This is ridiculous and I can barely function at work due to the withdrawals symptoms, which have also put a strain on my relationships with my significant other as well as my roommates.

I have been taking Lexapro 20 mg for about 9 years. I began experiencing extreme irritability, anger and frustration. My doctor began weaning me off and adding Zoloft. That didn't work. Now my doctor is taking me down to 10 mg every day and 100 Wellbutrin. The ringing in my head is horrible. It hasn't stopped for 2 weeks. Has anyone else experienced this withdrawal symptom?

Goiter can form when the production of T4 falls sharply. To renew the production, TSH is secreted in large amounts from the pituitary gland.

However, if the low production of T4 is caused by iodine deficiency, the increased secretion of TSH does not translate into an increased synthesis of T4. Instead, TSH needlessly stimulates the growth of new cells in the thyroid gland, and this causes the enlargement of the gland.

In mild cases, which are the most common, a mild iodine deficiency may lead to increased production of T3 in the thyroid gland. However, since most of the body’s store of T3 is made from the available T4 which are not being replenished, T4 is rapidly depleted.

Goiter is a big public health problem not only in poor countries but in some affluent nations of Europe and in Australia and New Zealand. The treatment is, however, simple. By supplying iodine supplements, goiter cases can be quickly resolved.

The easiest way to provide iodine supplementation to any population is by mandating that sale of only iodized salts.

Although goiter responds well to iodine supplementation, it is best to treat the iodine deficiency immediately. If left untreated, iodine deficiency progressively destroys the tissues of the thyroid gland. After five years, even iodine supplement or thyroxine replacement cannot reduce the size of goiter because the damage is then permanent.

It should be noted that goiter can be caused by hyperthyroidism too and this second type of goiter does not involve iodine deficiency.

Cretinism is closely linked to iodine deficiency and goiter. In fact, it was the observation that parents with goiter are more likely to have mentally retarded children that revealed the nature of cretinism.

Signs of cretinism include impaired mental development, squint, deaf-mutism, stunted growth, improper stance and walking gait as well as all the other symptoms of hypothyroidism including low basal metabolic rate, low basal body temperature, cold intolerance, fatigue, weight gain and hair loss.

Iodine deficiency is the most important cause of cretinism and it can account for about 15-point difference on the IQ (intelligence quotient) scale.

Iodine supplementation is the only way to prevent cretinism and the supplementation is most effective when given in early childhood while mental capacity is in rapid development.

Although alcoholism is present in 20% to 50% of hospitalized patients, it is diagnosed only about 5% of the time. A poll of physicians affiliated to the American Medical Association revealed that 71% of them believed they were too ambivalent or not competent to properly treat alcoholic patients.

Taking into consideration the research and science now readily available, the facts are clear concerning the dangers of alcohol withdrawal. Alcohol withdrawal should never be taken lightly and, in light of Dr. Maldonado’s findings relating to potential failings within the medical community; when considering detoxification from alcohol for yourself or a loved one, take the time necessary to research detox facilities within your area. Use the above information to ask questions of the facility. Armed with the knowledge of the severity and duration of alcohol withdrawal symptoms, make sure your choice of detox facility is prepared and equipped to deal with all of the above symptoms, from benign shakes to the potentially fatal DTs and seizures. When dealing with alcohol withdrawal, your life or the life of a loved one, may well depend upon it.

Poisoning is most often due to contaminated food or water. Arsenic is a natural compound that occurs in the soil, sometimes in dangerously high concentrations. Many cities and municipalities filter and test their water, but not all do; people who drink from private, particularly old, wells may also be at risk. Drinking only filtered, tested water is a good way to rule out this possibility. In rarer cases, people are intentionally poisoned, usually by a caretaker or someone else with direct access to food and water supply. Anyone who suspects intentional tampering should seek help from local authorities. Arsenic poisoning isn’t always fatal, but it can have life-altering consequences if left untreated for long periods of time.

43) To the lady that said she can not think of anyone who would want to hurt her. My own sister.

41) What poison acts slowly? I have been had tummy problems off and on for over a year now. I've been to the ER and the doctor never found an issue, although for the last 4 months not hardly a day goes by that I am not ill?

I suspect I am being given something, but what, I have no idea.

40) If you believe someone is poisoning you, there is an easy test. When he pours coffee for you and him, switch cups on him.

39) Are you people serious? I never dreamed this kind of thing was so widespread!

The reason that I'm here is because, I just read about that doctor whose trial is going on about him poisoning his wife with cyanide! That always piques my interest, because I truly believe my mother was murdered years ago by a con artist (his ex-wife and their daughter) that she married, but I could never prove anything because, I didn't know what type of poison he used.

It's a very long story, but it involved a substantial amount of money and property and as soon as the property was paid off, he talked my mother into purchasing a pre-need plan (for her burial plot and funeral) and within less than a year she was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer! All the years before she'd been as healthy as a horse, with no health problems at all! Anyway, she died a few years later and I knew he had done something to hasten her death so, he could get all the money and property, which he did!

It has taken a great toll on me not being able to get any help or be able to prove anything, but what is still disturbing is how her skin had turned yellowish with tiny purple dots after she died (along with some other similar things described here). At the time, I can remember asking why her skin was so yellow and her husband repeatedly said it was from all of the carrot juice she'd been drinking! Then, years later, I learned that the purple dots are definitely tell-tale signs of someone being poisoned, yet nobody seemed to have even noticed!

Anyway, it turns out that even if I could find out for sure what he did to her, there's nothing I could do about it now, because he's dead and he passed down all of the money/assets to his evil daughter, who, ironically, had a husband that suddenly dropped dead of cancer too!

So, all of you who keep having strange things happen to you (especially, on a consistent basis), if I were you, I'd try to set him/her up with a hidden camera/video, a recorder, setting up the containers in a specific manner so that you can see if they've been moved/used, marking the levels of fluid, etc., as well as, saving some of the things like shampoo, drinks, etc. that you think have made you ill by pouring small amounts in bottles, so if necessary, they can be tested later.

  • Pericarditis, especially viral pericarditis
  • Stroke
  • Vasculitis

Reduced lung function or constriction of the airways hampers gas exchange with the blood and therefore its oxygenation or the flow of oxygen rich air into the lungs. The subsequent build up of carbon dioxide in the blood (hypercapnia) and changes in blood pH may also be contributing factors to malaise associated with the respiratory system.

  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Acute bronchitis
  • Pulmonary tuberculosis (lung TB)
  • Bronchiectasis

Endocrine disorders are diseases pertaining to the glands and hormones. These structures and chemicals are responsible for regulating almost all activity in the body, including the metabolic rate, water and electrolyte levels, and blood glucose. Although symptoms of endocrine dysfunction is not always apparent immediately, dysfunction tends to lead to non-specific symptoms such as malaise.

  • Diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes)
  • Underactive or overactive thyroid gland
  • Adrenal gland disorders
  • Pituitary gland dysfunction

Autoimmune disorders where the immune system turns against the body’s own tissues may present with malaise apart from localized symptoms pertaining to the organ that is affected. Immune deficient states where the immune defenses are weakened may increase the chances of recurrent infections from various pathogens. Malaise may sometimes be a constant feeling apart from the symptoms specific to each infection.

  • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Long term diabetes mellitus

A flu-like feeling can occur shortly after vaccinations but is usually short-lived. This is a response of the immune system as it develops protection against the specific disease.

Malignant tumors may also contribute to malaise even when the cancer is well localized. However, it is cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma that are more likely to present with non-specific symptoms like malaise for a long period of time even in the absence of other symptoms. Some cancers produce and secrete certain hormone-like substances into the bloodstream – carcinoid syndrome. Metastatic spread involving cancer on multiple sites, chemotherapy and radiation therapy are among the more common cancer causes of malaise.

The most common hematological causes of malaise is severe anemia. However, changes in blood pH and a build up of wastes in the bloodstream (uremia) associated with kidney disorders are other common causes. Very serious cases includes septicemia where there is an accumulation of bacterial toxins in the bloodstream.

The psychiatric causes of malaise is largely associated with depression. There may be no change in any of the usual systems that are affected in malaise. Rather the low quantities of serotonin and the subsequent depressed mood may be mistaken for a fluish feeling. Sometimes it is entirely psychogenic meaning that it is imagined rather than being associated with actual changes in the body. Many psychiatric drugs cause malaise.

Prescription medication that may contribute to malaise includes:

  • Antihistamines
  • Antiretrovirals for HIV/AIDS
  • High blood pressure medication
  • Seizure drugs

Drug interactions where there is a reaction with the use of two or more medication simultaneously may also be responsible for malaise. Alcoholism, accidental or intentional poisoning and the use of illicit drugs can all contribute to malaise even after these substances wear off and have been removed from the system.

From its discovery until 2006, confirmed cases of Zika virus infection were rare, although cases were reported during the 60's in Africa and South-East Asia. Analysis suggested that the African and Asian strains emerged as two distinct lineages.

The first outbreak outside of Africa and Asia was documented on Yap Island in the Federal States of Micronesia, in 2007.

Clinical and serologic evidence indicate that 2 American scientists contracted Zika virus infections while working in Senegal in 2008. One of the scientists transmitted this arbovirus to his wife after his return home. Direct contact is implicated as the transmission route, most likely as a sexually transmitted infection since none of their four children contracted the virus.

The largest outbreak of the Zika Virus began in October 2013 in French Polynesia, South Pacific with an estimated 28,000 infections. Outbreaks also occurred in Easter Island, the Cook Islands and New Caledonia.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system — literally shorting out the nerves that signal our legs to move, our eyes to close and our lungs to breathe.

“It’s supposed to be a rare disorder,” said Dr. Ana Delgado. But given the number of cases the neurologist has seen since joining Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in August, she is convinced something is triggering an increase in the number of cases and the severity of this devastating and sometimes fatal syndrome.

The National Institutes of Health estimates one of every 100,000 people will contract GBS. But Scott Culbine, who is still recovering from his attack this past August, says there is talk of revising that number to one in every 50,000 people — a statistic far more in line with GBS patient numbers at Madonna.

Currently there are five GBS in-patients at Madonna, including Scipio, and one outpatient. Once upon a time, it was rare for Madonna to have even one GBS patient; nowadays it is rare not to have one or more, said Dan Kasparek, speech/language pathologist and Neurological Conditions Program leader. It is interesting how the CDC will throw around the term “epidemic” to justify mass vaccination at a college campus where 7 students come down with meningitis during a 9-month period, prompting them to administer an unapproved meningitis vaccine. But that same logic is not used for adverse reactions to vaccines, where hundreds, if not thousands of people are being injured and crippled. As you can see from the HHS report above, it is very difficult to get the government to pay for vaccine injuries, and often takes years of costly litigation in court. This is obviously just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to injuries due to the flu vaccine.

It has been documented how the CDC inflates the numbers of flu deaths each year in order to sell more flu vaccines. We have also reported how there is strong evidence that the flu vaccine is not only ineffective, but could be causing people to have more severe cases of the flu (see: Is Flu Vaccine Causing Increase in H1N1 Outbreaks? 5 Year Old Boy Dies from H1N1 Virus, Even Though He Was Vaccinated Month Before).

To understand how vaccine injuries and deaths are dealt with in a special “vaccine court” that was set up by Congress, after granting legal immunity to pharmaceutical companies in 1986 for any damages caused by vaccines (and which was then upheld by the Supreme Court in 2011), watch the excellent videos below by Emmy Award winning journalist Ben Swann, as well as the video by The Canary Party, narrated by actor Rob Schneider.

Think twice and do your own research before getting a flu vaccine, or you too might become an ignored statistic with a ruined life.

Some people who react to milk may either have Coeliac disease or Non Coeliac Gluten Intolerance. This is because these people also develop lactose intolerance. Please read our dedicated page for this. Read More »»

Currently the only 100% successful treatment for milk allergies is total avoidance of milk proteins. Infants who develop milk allergy, usually outgrow the condition. However, if the infants are breast-fed, the lactating mothers are given an elimination diet. If symptoms are not relieved or if the infants are bottle-fed, milk substitute formulas are used to provide the infant with a complete source of nutrition. Milk substitutes include soy milk, rice milk, and hypoallergenic formulas based on hydrolysed protein or free amino acids. Please note soy milk is hyperallergenic i.e. it is easy for the immune system to think it is harmful.

    Enzyme Therapy:
As explained above food allergy is triggered by proteins and the immune system mistakenly thinks they are harmful proteins. Proteins are broken down by enzymes when digested, and lack of proper breakdown may be the cause for the proteins to become allergens. Hence, as explained in Better Nutrition Journal and several medical papers enzyme therapy can help eliminate or minimise symptoms. Read Enzymes to the Rescue. Commercially available enzymes that break down proteins are available on the market and a very effective product is availably in the 'products' section here. Prolactazyme Forte does a brilliant job in most cases and can be used by children and adults alike.

Here's some information about cold and flu problems.

It is possible to effectively ease the pain and discomfort of colds and flu, naturally. Check out these two pages and hopefully they can help.

Having a cold or getting flu can really make one feel rotten. There are things you can do to help speed up recovery if you catch one. Also there are things you can do to try and minimise or prevent one in the first place. The same herbs that keep colds and flu at bay, can also help you get rid of it faster.

The common cold is caused by any one of 200 different viruses. When infection occurs, the walls of the respiratory tract swell and produce excess mucus, giving rise to the typical cold symptoms.

Symptoms range from sore throat, running nose, nasal congestion, watery eyes to hacking cough, headache, and fever. Most colds run their course in 7-10 days. Recurrent colds (almost constantly suffering) may indicate a lowered immune capacity and too much stress and often not enough sleep.

Colds spread from person to person and are highly contagious. Coughing, sneezing or hand to hand contact will easily pass the virus on. The virus can also live for several hours on everyday surfaces.

BUT - the above is what usually happens. It is possible to speed up the recovery and sometimes a cold can last just a day instead of a week!

One particular herb has recently had a lot of press coverage and marketing as a 'new' cure for colds. Echinacea has in fact been used by America Indians for hundreds of years.

A key thing with echinacea is that the quality of the actual herbal echinacea is vitally important. This leads on to the question of whether echinacea can be the answer.

The only way to know if something like echinacea can help or not is to try it. But do not buy a cheap, watered down echinacea or one that is old. It will be a waste of money and you will be disappointed. Ensure the herb is fresh.

Colds can take hold for many reasons and things such as stress, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, or anxiety or worry over something can all make you more susceptible. So if these other factors are not also looked at and handled, a cold can drag on.

Echinacea is originally from the North America Plains, but varieties of the species are now found on most continents. Echinacea increases levels of properdin in the body. Perpedin is a chemical which stimulates some of the internal protective mechanisms the immune system responsible. Importantly it seems to stregthen the defence mechanisms which protect the body against bacterial attacks and viruses.

Its anti-bacterial effect makes it a good herb for treating many viral and bacterial infections. Echinacea is also an excellent blood cleanser, it helps to sweep dead cells and other debris through the channels of the lymphatic system. And dispatches white blood cells to fight the infection.

Die Impfung gegen die Influenza soll vor der "echten Grippe" schützen. Besonders kranke und ältere Menschen sollten diese in Erwägung ziehen.

Myositis is the medical term for muscle inflammation. In myositis, inflammation damages the fibers of a muscle. This causes muscles to be weak by interfering with the ability of the muscles to contract. Although myositis can cause muscle aches and muscle tenderness, weakness is usually the dominant symptom.

Diagnosis is made by your vet. Your vet will make this diagnosis based on symptoms and can have the diagnosis confirmed by taking a swab from your cat's throat and sending it to the laboratory for testing.

Cat flu is seldom fatal in previously healthy cats. Infected cats will require intensive nursing and support. Kittens are more at risk from cat flu than adult cats.

There is no cure for a viral infection however the cat can be kept as comfortable as possible by keeping it warm and treating the symptoms. Your vet may prescribe eye drops or ointment for the conjunctivitis,

Corneal ulcers must be examined by your vet who will recommend appropriate treatment.

Discharging eyes and nose should be bathed frequently with warm salty water.

Secondary bacterial infection can be treated by your vet with antibiotics.

Mouth ulcers can be severe and cause your cat to stop eating. Your vet needs to be consulted if your cat has stopped eating and drinking. Sometimes the cat has to be hospitalized and force fed because the mouth ulcers are so painful the cat refuses to eat.

Dehydrated cats may need to be put on intravenous fluids and this will require spending a day or two in hospital.

If the cat has lost it's sense of smell it will lose interest in it's food. Encourage your cat to eat by offering it strongly smelling food such as sardines.

How is Feline Herpes Virus and Feline Calicivirus spread?

Infected cats should be kept isolated from other cats

The virus spreads from cat to cat contact and with contact from the discharge from the nose and eyes. It can also spread from the cat sneezing much the same way a cold is spread in humans.

The virus can live outside the cat's body for a period of time and so infection can be transmitted via bowls, bedding, cages or in fact anything your cat comes into contact with. You can also spread the virus yourself from one cat to another on your hands or on your clothing.

The Herpes Virus can live outside the cat's body for approximately 24 hours but the Calicivirus can survive much longer sometimes for up to 7 - 10 days

In the United States, about 36,000 people (mostly over the age of 65) die each year from the flu.

The flu is spread from person to person through coughs and sneezes. Sometimes people get the flu by touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching their mouth, nose or eyes. This can happen at home, work, church or school -- anywhere that we share close space or touch the same things, like chairs and tables, doors, and shopping carts.

    • Stay home.
    • Avoid contact with others.
    • Wait 24 hours after your fever has gone away before going out.
    • Get lots of rest.
    • Drink plenty of fluids, especially water.
    • When you cough or sneeze, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, or with your upper sleeve or the inside of your elbow.
    • Avoid smoking and drinking.
    • Wash your hands often.

The flu should clear up on its own. Call a doctor if you:

    • Have a fever above 102 degrees for more than 1-2 days.
    • Have symptomes that last longer than 10 days.
    • Have a fever and also develop a rash.
    • Get worse instead of better.
    • Get better and then get sick again.

Get immediate medical attention for trouble breathing, dizziness, confusion, chest pain, repeated vomiting or other severe symptoms. Call a doctor if a child under 2, adult over 65, pregnant woman, or person with a chronic medical condition (including diabetes, asthma or heart disease) gets the flu.

We all want to protect our families and our community as best we can. That starts with taking care of ourselves and staying healthy. Each year there are new flu viruses -- and a new vaccine to fight th

The flu vaccine contains flu viruses that are grown in a laboratory and then killed (also called "inactivated"). These are made into a vaccine, which can be injected or sprayed in the nose to help protect against the flu. The vaccine is not a treatment for people who already have the flu. Instead, it helps prevent people from getting the flu in the first place. The vaccine builds our body's ability to fight the flu.

Everyone over 6 months old should get the flu vaccine each year. It is especially important for people who are more likely to get sick, and those who can spread the virus to others. This includes children between 6 months and 5 years old (especially children younger than 2); adults over 65; pregnant women; people with chronic medical conditions including diabetes, asthma, heart disease, cancer, and HIV; people who live in nursing homes; and health care workers. Those who live with or care for children less than 6 months of age should also get the vaccine.

Certain people should talk with a doctor before getting a flu shot. This includes people who have had a severe allergic reaction to eggs or to a previous flu shot; people who have had Guillain-Barre Syndrome; or anyone who has a fever.

Yes, it is okay to get the vaccine if you have a mild illness -- as long as you do not have a fever.

I got a flu vaccine a year* ago. Do I still need another one?

Yes. The flu vaccine changes every year, to protect against new flu viruses that are expected. Last year's vaccine may not protect against this year's viruses.

Your doctor can provide the flu vaccine. Low cost flu vaccines are also available at most pharmacies. The Long Beach Health Department will be providing flu shots by appointment beginning October 10th - please call (562) 570-4315 to set up an appointment.
