Coughing and drooling can also be clear indications of cat flu or cat colds. Drooling can be particularly upsetting for cat owners as your moggy's fur can become completely soaked in saliva. Coughing is also very distressing and can sometimes lead to retching.

Below are details of the main symptoms associated with each of the two viruses normally associated with cat flu - Feline HerpesVirus (FHV- 1) and Feline Calicivirus (FCV)

Feline HerpesVirus (FHV- 1):

>> Swollen eyes often accompanied by a discharge. Sometimes this can lead to the development of corneal ulcers.

>> Sneezing and inflammation of the lining is of the nose (rhinitis). Discharge from the nose is initially clear but becomes green and thick as cat flu develops. Your cat's sense of smell may deteriorate significantly, thereby leading to a lack of interest in food.

>> Your cat will clearly appear unwell and may develop a fever. A loss of appetite is very likely and dehydration becomes a real risk.

Feline Calicivirus (FVC):

>> Mouth ulcers are a very common symptom of feline calicivirus and this ultimately triggers off drooling and loss of appetite.

>> Ulcers can affect various parts of your cat including the tongue, palate, mouth, tip of the nose and the lips. One particular strain of FVC is even known to lead to ulcers in a cat's paws.

>> Your cat's nose and eyes are likely to be runny and gingivitis may affect the gums. A fever may also develop and your cat may start to limp as a result of pain in the joints.

If you have been trying to get pregnant, or you have a suspicion that you may have conceived, there are some common signs and symptoms that occur to most women early in their pregnancy. These symptoms include emotional signs as well as physical symptoms. If you identify with these signs, and feel that you may be pregnant, it is important to confirm your pregnancy as early as possible to begin prenatal care for you and your new baby.

A missed period is one of the most obvious signs of pregnancy, but by the time you realize you have missed your period you could already be 2-3 weeks pregnant. Some early symptoms of pregnancy begin even before a missed period. These signs include flu like symptoms, fatigue, headache, implantation bleeding, mood swings, nausea, changes in your breasts, frequent urination, and odd food cravings. Many of these symptoms mimic pre-menstrual symptoms and can occur a few days after conception occurs.

Many women report feeling severe fatigue very early in their pregnancy; the fatigue quickly goes away and then they feel quite energetic until late in the pregnancy. Implantation bleeding occurs when the fertilized egg implants itself into the uterine wall; this process occurs 6-12 days after conception and may be accompanied by light spotting and cramps.

Hot flashes, vaginal dryness and night sweats are some of the best-known symptoms of menopause. However, other symptoms can catch women by surprise. Some women may realize they no longer recognize their own reflection as their skin becomes thin, dry and itchy. Skin changes during menopause are directly related to the same hormonal fluctuations that cause other menopause symptoms. As the ovaries stop producing eggs, the production of estrogen also declines. Estrogen stimulates the body’s oil and collagen production. When estrogen levels drop, women may experience a sudden increase in dry, flaky or itchy skin.

Menopause can cause a variety of symptoms in women. Some symptoms, such as night sweats or hot flashes, are quite well known. Others, such as paresthesis, are less well known but can cause significant discomfort or even pain. Paresthesis refers to a tingling sensation in the extremities. Tingling in hands and feet is generally caused by the hormonal changes associated with menopause. It can range from mild to severe and include tingling, burning, stinging, prickling, increased sensitivity or numbness in the hands and feet. You may feel as though you are walking on gravel or experience a warm sensation accompanied by inflammation.

Allergies can be frustrating at the best of time, but if you are struggling with the sudden onset or worsening of respiratory allergies during menopause, you may find yourself more miserable than before. The hormonal fluctuations of menopause can bring with them numerous symptoms, including moodiness, irritability and hot flashes. According to a new study published in the “Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology,” they may also be more likely to cause allergies.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome refers to dysfunction in the tendons and nerves in your wrist and hand. Symptoms can include pain, swelling, tingling, numbness and loss of strength. Although the dominant hand is most commonly affect, many people experience symptoms in both of their hands.

Women are more likely to develop heart disease during and after menopause, but according to a new study, they may also be more likely to experience high cholesterol. This risk appears to exist for all women regardless of socioeconomic status or ethnicity. For more than a decade, the study followed more than 1,000 women experiencing menopause. They were tested annually for heart disease risk factors, including cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose levels.

The carbohydrates you eat provide your body with fuel in the form of glucose. Blood sugar refers to the amount of glucose in your body. A normal blood sugar is about 80 mg/dl after fasting or before a meal. However, typical blood sugar levels may fluctuate between 80 mg/dl and 120 mg/dl.

A rapid heartbeat can occur for many reasons and is particularly common during exercise or moments of extreme stress. When you are experiencing rapid heartbeats, or tachycardia, during perimenopause or menopause, however, your heart rate may speed dramatically for no apparent reason. You may experience an uncomfortable fluttering or flopping sensation in your chest, your heart may be pounding, you may feel lightheaded and you may struggle to catch your breath. Some women may even faint.

Menopause is more than just the cessation of periods for many women. It can bring with it many different symptoms that can range from mild to severe. Dizziness can be one of the more bothersome symptoms and can leave women feeling ill and unable to move quickly or feeling as though they are about to faint.

Indigestion can interfere with healthy eating habits and leave you feeling uncomfortable, bloated or sick. You may experience nausea, abdominal pain, heartburn, burping, gas or vomiting. Apart from being inconvenient, digestion difficulties can significantly affect your quality of life. It can become more common during menopause, although a menopause natural treatment can help relieve symptoms.

Menopause is often accompanied by a variety of symptoms, but rarely do women expect to have increased allergies along with their night sweats, irritability and hot flashes. However, as hormone production slows and eventually stops in the ovaries, the adrenal glands will take over the job. If the adrenal glands become stressed, perimenopausal and menopausal women may experience an uptick in allergies, including food allergies.

Photo allergies are reactions that cause dramatic changes in the skin within one to three days of sun exposure. UV rays trigger an immune system response, and an itchy, uncomfortable rash develops. Unlike a sunburn, this reaction is not isolated to the areas directly exposed to UV rays but can be spread across the body. Although this kind of reaction is most commonly related to medications or topical treatments that can increase sensitivity, it can also be related to menopause.

When ovulation and menstruation cease and are absent for a year, a woman is said to be in menopause. The period immediately preceding menopause is known as perimenopause. Perimenopause and menopause often bring with them dramatic physical and emotional changes that can include uncomfortable symptoms, such as breast tenderness. A natural menopause treatment may be able to help alleviate this type of breast discomfort.

Body odor may not be the favorite topic of a woman going through perimenopause or menopause, but it may well be a subject that is frequently on her mind. Changes in body odor are common as women go through the hormonal fluctuations that accompany menopause.

The sensation of electric shocks on the skin can be quite disconcerting and uncomfortable. You may experience this common menopause symptom as a twitching sensation, zaps, tingles or the feeling of a rubber band snapping inside your skin. In some cases, the tingling, numbness or twitching of shocks may precede a hot flash or night sweat. Natural menopause treatment products may be able to relieve your discomfort.

Perimenopause and menopause can bring with them many symptoms as hormones fluctuate and eventually decrease. Hot flashes and night sweats are some of the best-known symptoms, but many women experience what may seem to be a near-constant state of premenstrual syndrome. Their emotions may be tumultuous, and they may have difficulty concentrating. This can lead to a lack of motivation, irritability, anxiety, moodiness and other emotional swings. In some cases, difficulty with concentration can be caused by depression, which can either be triggered or worsened by menopause or perimenopause, the period just before menopause when your periods become erratic or irregular.

Yes, these viruses change and adapt all the time. That's they're survival mechanism. They're constantly mutating, evolving, taking on new names and jumping from one animal to the next.

3) What about the bird flu that showed up in various parts of the world in 2006 and 2007? Was it the same as Asian flue or was it a slightly different strain of the virus? Does the virus keep changing?

2) @Steamland, as far as we know there are two reasons for this. One is just probability. Asia contains a huge portion of the world's population and is a massive part of the geographic world. People sometimes refer to Asia like it's a single country but about a third of the world is classified as Asia. Add in more than half the world's population and it makes sense than many of the worlds diseases would originate there. Also to blame is the developing nature of many regions within Asia. Not only do billions of people live relatively close together, some live close together in poor hygienic conditions with little access to proper sanitation and clean water. Compound this with the fact that a portion of these people live in close contact with farm animals. Farm animals, like ducks, chickens and pigs are usually the original hosts from which many new diseases mutate and make the jump to humans. Not only that but often these farm animals live in close proximity with each other which can promote mutation conditions in certain viruses and bacteria.

1) Why do all of these horrible pandemic diseases seem to come from Asia? Why don't they originate in places like America?

Flu shot reduces risk of rare Guillain-Barré Syndrome in most cases, study finds

Fear of developing Guillain-Barré Syndrome is often cited by health-care workers as a reason not to get a flu shot.

It's flu season. File photo

Fear of developing Guillain-Barré Syndrome is often cited by health-care workers as a reason not to get a flu shot.

But new research suggests that in most cases the flu vaccine actually reduces the risk of the rare disorder by cutting the risk of influenza.

Two Ottawa researchers — Kumanan Wilson, physician and senior scientist at The Ottawa Hospital and professor of medicine at the University of Ottawa, and Steven Hawken, a scientist at The Ottawa Hospital — were involved in the study published Wednesday in the U.S. Centre for Disease Control’s journal Emerging Infectious Diseases that assessed the effect of seasonal influenza vaccine on the risk of acquiring Guillain-Barré Syndrome (or GBS).

Guillain-Barré is a rare, but serious, autoimmune disorder that causes muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis. Most patients require hospitalization and about one-quarter require intensive care. Four per cent of patients will die within one year of developing the condition.

About 20 people out of every million will develop GBS. In most cases, GBS is preceded by a respiratory or gastrointestinal infection. Studies have shown it is associated with influenza.

They’re warning people in some central Kentucky counties about a fast-spreading stomach virus.

This winter's cold weather is keeping people inside and in close quarters which is allowing sicknesses, like the norovirus, to spread easily.

“We have had a lot of reports of illness in the community and the schools of G.I. symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting and fever,” said Pam Spradling, the Director of Administrative Services at the Montgomery County Health Department.

Spradling says the county hasn't had any confirmed norovirus cases yet.

But she says it is common for people to think they have the flu when they actually have norovirus.

“A lot of the times we hear people call norovirus the stomach flu which isn't true. It is not the flu. The flu is influenza and a completely different virus.”

Each year, the highly contagious norovirus causes about 21 million illnesses, including 70,000 hospitalizations and 800 deaths, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Recently, many schools in our area have reported low attendance due to illness.

Health experts say this isn't surprising since viruses, like the norovirus, spread the quickest in schools, hospitals and nursing homes.

There isn’t a particular treatment or vaccine against norovirus but Spradling says the best defense is remembering not to skip the sink.

Health experts say symptoms of the norovirus last for about two days.

10 Vitamin D Deficiency Symptoms Many Doctors Miss

Flu is actually vitamin D deficiency disease. It is not a happenstance occurrence because you didn’t get a flu shot or sat next to a coughing person at Church or on the train.

Dr. John Cannell of the Vitamin D Council and one of the most preeminent Vitamin D researchers in the world today, has identified that vitamin D helps produce the antimicrobial peptides that protect against the flu. This is why people are more prone to the flu in winter when Vitamin D producing sunshine is minimal or nonexistent at some latitudes, or people are too bundled up to get enough skin exposed in the first place.

Scientific research bolsters Dr. Cannell’s suggestion that vitamin D deficiency is why people get the flu. A study published in the journal Nature Immunology further explains how vitamin D protects us by properly activating T cells, an important part of the immune system:

“When a T cell is exposed to a foreign pathogen, it extends a signaling device or ‘antenna’ known as a vitamin D receptor, with which it searches for vitamin D.

“This year, the flu strain mutated a little bit and there is one component of the flu strain that is causing the flu in people who actually did get the shot,” she said.

Several local hospitals are now limiting visitors to try and stop the spread of the flu. At the University of Maryland Medical Center, no visitors under the age of 18 will be allowed in the hospital, only two adult visitors can see a patient at one time and visitors experiencing flu symptoms are not permitted.

Flu season normally lasts through February and March.

Experts say they are expecting another surge in flu cases later in the season.

I was prescribed Lamictal for BiPolar. I started off at 25mg a day for 14 & then 5omg for 14 days. I am on my 4th day ( of the 50mg) & am having horrible "flu" like symptoms. Has anyone else experienced this. Thanks for any info.:)

I have hoarseness weight gain achiness in my legs and feet and more I askes to be dropped to 50 as I was on 100mg and had more side effects

Are your feet swollen and hands? do you feel weak? and you mentioned you have gained weight, What other side effects do you have because they may be serious.

contact your doc, and once again i ask u r u on other meds cause of the interactions?

Hi Im bi polar and I have been on in it for 3 or 4 years was on 200mg now Im on 300mg, no side effects but 4 me. Its a common side effect to have flu like symtoms, (body aches and chills).
I would still recommend u tell your doc.

hope this helps

i did talk to my doc and i think it is time for a second opinion. did anyone gain weight. i also have gained 15 lbs most fluid but how good is that on the rest of your body. i am afraid it is going to effect my heart

Try to avoid fluids that have to much sodium in them..that causes water retention. even bottled water. there is on form nestle gas free (at least here) free of sodium, also dont add sault to your meals, as sodium is a prservative that pratically comes in everything.

I appreciate everyone's comments. That is really the only side-effect I have had is the flu like symptoms. I have not gained weight at all. To the one that commented on the retention of fluid, that is not normal, if your Dr insist you stay on Lamictal maybe you could request they put you on 25mg of Hydrochlorothiazide a day. That will drop that water weight real quick. I haven't heard of weight gain with Lamictal. Actually, one of the side effects is "Anorexia". Has anyone else experienced weight gain ( or loss) with Lamictal?

Several side effects are possible with Lamictal. Weight gain does appear to be one of them, although it is not among the most commonly reported Lamictal side effects. This data comes from clinical trials where the drug was extensively studied and side effects were documented.

In studies, between 1 and 5 percent of people taking Lamictal for bipolar disorder treatment experienced weight gain. However, weight gain was not reported as a side effect in people taking it to control seizures.

Some people who react to milk may either have Coeliac disease or Non Coeliac Gluten Intolerance. This is because these people also develop lactose intolerance. Please read our dedicated page for this. Read More »»

Currently the only 100% successful treatment for milk allergies is total avoidance of milk proteins. Infants who develop milk allergy, usually outgrow the condition. However, if the infants are breast-fed, the lactating mothers are given an elimination diet. If symptoms are not relieved or if the infants are bottle-fed, milk substitute formulas are used to provide the infant with a complete source of nutrition. Milk substitutes include soy milk, rice milk, and hypoallergenic formulas based on hydrolysed protein or free amino acids. Please note soy milk is hyperallergenic i.e. it is easy for the immune system to think it is harmful.

Enzyme Therapy:
As explained above food allergy is triggered by proteins and the immune system mistakenly thinks they are harmful proteins. Proteins are broken down by enzymes when digested, and lack of proper breakdown may be the cause for the proteins to become allergens. Hence, as explained in Better Nutrition Journal and several medical papers enzyme therapy can help eliminate or minimise symptoms. Read Enzymes to the Rescue. Commercially available enzymes that break down proteins are available on the market and a very effective product is availably in the 'products' section here. Prolactazyme Forte does a brilliant job in most cases and can be used by children and adults alike.

Years ago, my husband and I ate at a “hole in the wall” Mexican restaurant. He thought his meal tasted great. Mine was pretty good too. While we were waiting for the check, he started to feel sick. It came on so fast. He got up to go look for the bathroom and immediately started vomiting. He left a trail of vomit all the way to the bathroom (which unfortunately was the women’s bathroom, poor guy). Anyway, when he finished vomiting he felt fine. Two hours later, he had a big bowl of ice cream with chocolate sauce. I suspect that this type of food poisoning was from the toxins produced either by Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus cereus since it came on so suddenly and was over so quickly. No one else caught it from him which further supports a diagnosis of food poisoning.

Another example of obvious non-contagious food poisoning happened to my sister and her coworker recently. They went to happy hour (at 5pm) at a local restaurant and shared an appetizer of fried calamari with a dipping sauce. At 10pm, they were both vomiting. Since they don't live together and didn't eat anything else that was the same that day, I am very certain that they got food poisoning from that shared appetizer. The dipping sauce was probably sitting out barely warm under a heat lamp all afternoon growing toxin producing bacteria. No one else caught it from them so that further suggests that it was food poisoning.

Another example of non-contagious food poisoning recently happened to a friend and her husband after having dinner at a restaurant. They had different meals but they both got the same house salad (lettuce, eggs, tomato, cheese, croutons, cucumbers, and creamy Italian dressing). My friend went to bed at 9:30pm and thought her stomach felt odd but she fell asleep anyway. She woke up at 10:15pm and had to run to the toilet to vomit. She had 1 violent episode of vomiting and then felt okay. She slept the rest of the night. She was perfectly fine the next day. This seems like a case of non-contagious food poisoning because it came on so quickly after the meal and was over quickly. Although it is possible to vomit just 1 time from a stomach flu virus, they usually don't end that quickly. Her husband had a different story. He had a stomachache after dinner just like she did. However, he did not vomit. He had a stomachache for the next 2 days and then had diarrhea for the following 3 days. He wasn't right for a week. If I was just looking at his symptoms, I'd say that he probably has something contagious. However, since his wife most definitely has the non-contagious form, and they both felt sick at the same time, I would blame it on a bad salad. This example shows us that even the same bad food can affect people differently. I know throwing up is scary but when you eat something bad, it is probably the fastest way to feel better. My friend's husband didn't throw up and kept the bad stuff in. He was sick all week.

Today, while researching the medicine, I found out that one of the side effects was increased FSH and LH, which increases estrogen to start ovulation. So that's why there could be this increase in the seizures with the meds.

I'm frustrated as to what to do now. I've had it for years. With mainstreamed medicine they only rely on pharmaceutical companies for treatment, and the natural alternatives which are usually more helpful are never promoted by them or covered by insurance. Something has to change in how insurance covers medical forms of treatment!

If you suspect you may be infected with H5N1, seek medical help immediately. The CDC suggests wearing a mask and letting your health professional know about any places you may have travelled recently.

Cases of H5N1 infected poultry stock have thus far only been found in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Middle East, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada. And though transmission to humans is rare, it has occurred in at least 600 cases since 2003, resulting from people handling sick or dead birds infected with the virus, or being in their environments.

15,000 birds was reduced to 100 in a number of days from the virus- the survivors were immediately quarantined and humanely euthanized. The result would be the same for a backyard flock. There is no such thing as reducing losses in backyard flocks with avian influenza, so there is no need for discussion of survivors being carriers- once the virus is confirmed, the entire flock is euthanized.

Coryza is a term that describes the inflammation of the mucous membrane in the nasal cavity which results to nasal congestion, loss of smell and others.. According to medical sites, it is synonymous or associated with having colds or runny nose. It comes from a Greek word Koryza wherein the words “kara” and “zeein” are combined and it means boiling over head.

When a person experiences coryza, it is not always due to infection or allergic reaction. It can also happen when a person is exposed to cold temperature, eating spicy foods and even narcotic withdrawal. Also, coryza is one of the hallmarks of the “four Cs” of measles. It includes: Cough, Conjuctivitis, Koplik’s Spots and Coryza.

Having a stuffy nose or coryza can be a symptom of a certain condition or disease. Usually, the condition affects the respiratory system and it is associated with symptoms like:

    • Cough
    • Sputum production or phlegm- clear, yellow, light brown or green mucus
    • Shortness of breath
    • Loss of smell
    • Sneezing
    • Sore throat
    • Nasal congestion
    • Headache
    • Body aches or body malaise
    • Enlarged lymph nodes
    • Fever
    • Fatigue
    • Fainting

Since coryza is a hallmark symptom of measles, a person with measles will also feel the following symptoms:

    • Fever
    • Loss of appetite
    • Runny nose
    • Rashes that develops from two to four days and it starts in the face, then the trunk and the arms and legs
    • Koplik’s spot or grayish spots inside the cheek
    • Conjunctivitis

    • Rhinitis
    • Sinusitis
    • Common colds
    • Allergic reactions due to pollens, animal dander, some foods and medicines
    • Measles
    • Influenza or flu

Coryza is not a life threatening disease. Usually common colds will go away even if medication is not taken. However, to completely eradicate the feeling of discomfort treating the underlying conditions would help. For instance, in cases where a person experiences sinusitis or rhinitis, a person may take antibiotics, antihistamine if there are allergies and even nasal irrigation. Surgeries may also be done for chronic rhinitis or sinusitis. An example of the surgery is FESS or the functional endoscopic sinus surgery. There is a removal of the anatomical and pathological obstructions in the sinuses or other parts of the nasal area to restore the normal clearance of the sinuses. Surgeries however should be done for patient who cannot find relief of finds very minimal relief for chronic diseases.

Antihistamines and some antibiotics would also be given to patient’ experiencing coryza due to allergies like pollens, animal dander and even food allergies. There are also decongestants that would help the person relieve from colds and some nasal sprays.

For children or adults with measles, there is no specific drug to treat this problem. Doctors would recommend getting plenty of rests, increasing their fluid intake, using vaporizer since it can help the person ease from cough. Sponge baths using lukewarm water is also therapeutic to help avoid fever and reduce discomfort. Some medications like pain relievers and NSAIDs or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to help them feel comfortable and reduce fever and some pain. there are also vaccinations to prevent measles which offered to babies from 9 month onwards. It is best to consult pediatricians to know more about the vaccination.

Aside from the medications, there are also foods that will help the person get some relief from coryza. These foods include:

    • Apple- it is ideal to eat apple without peeling them before meals
    • Tea- this provides relief from colds, sneezing and some secretions. But if the patient has sinusitis accompanied with thick and foul smelling secretions, taking tea is not advisable.
    • Grapes- about 50 grams of grapes prevents colds
    • Mulberry
    • Betel leaf
    • Amla

There is also no need to spend money on medications since home remedies can be done to treat coryza.

    1. Orange juice – it is advisable to drink cold orange juice during summer and hot orange juice in winter. Orange juice powder is not advisable. Instead, they should peel the oranges in small pieces and boil in. they should strain the orange and use only the juice.
    2. Aniseed – boiling the 15 grams of aniseed plus 7 cloves in ½ liter of water. Only about ¼ should be taken and they can add sugar if desired.
    3. Coriander – coriander provides energy to the brain so they need to boil about 125 grams of coriander powder in ½ liter of water. After straining, they can add about 125 grams of sugar and heat the mixture again.
    4. Lemon – make some lemon juice in lukewarm water. It can be taken in the morning and evening and it can be mixed with honey.
    5. Figs – 5 figs to be boiled in water and then strained. It should be taken in the morning and evening.
    6. Garlic – eating garlic can also be beneficial to get rid of sneezing and some colds.
    7. Pepper and milk – adding 5 pieces of long pepper in milk while boiling it can also be a remedy for coryza.
    8. Carrot – mixing 325 ml of carrot juice (readily made or prepared) and 125 ml of spinach juice can provide relief from colds and coryza.
    9. Turmenic – missing a teaspoon of turmenic powder in hot water and taking it three times a days can provide remedy for coryza and even asthma.

Yoga, which is becoming popular these days because of the benefits it bring can also provide relief from coryza. Certain yoga poses like Bhastrika Pranayam, Kalplabhati Pranayama nd Anulom Vilom Pranayam can be done by the patient. How Long Before a Dog with Parvo Begins Showing Symptoms?

Parvo is a systemic infection that affects the intestinal lining in canines. The infection can spread through a litter of puppies by way of infected feces. Puppies usually die within hours or days after symptoms show up. Dehydration is the primary cause of death, and treatment with fluids can save a puppy if applied quickly and forcibly. Veterinarians treating a puppy with parvo will usually begin an I.V. immediately, hoping to combat the illness with a flood of fluids to hydrate the puppy. An infusion of promethazine, or some other anti-nausea drug, will help prevent reguritation.

If your puppy, or puppies, are exposed to the parvo virus, they may not show symptoms until six to ten days afterwards. These symptoms include a watery diarrhea, vomiting, weakness and loss of appetite. Parvo is a very serious and deadly condition for dogs, and once they have contacted the virus, the chance of survival is less than twenty percent. Even so, with prompt and aggressive treatment, some puppies have survived this deadly disease. Proper treatment of parvo includes a good supply of fluids and antibiotics, as well as other nutrients added to rehydration solutions.

Parvo should be treated as soon as possible. If you cannot afford the services of a veterinarian, you should aggressively treat your puppy by forcing liquids with a meat basting syringe. Gatorade, clear broth or infant pedialyte can help hydrate a sick puppy, but must be forcibly given as often as possible. Home treatment must replicate the treatment from a veterinary office which provides hydration intravenously, so you must force the liquids every few minutes. You can make an effective oral rehydration solution by adding a teaspoon of salt and two tablespoons of sugar to a quart of sugar.

The cardiac form of parvo affects the respiratory system of dogs. Cardiovascular parvo is rare, and is usually contacted by the unborn puppy before birth. Puppies may be stillborn or die soon after birth, due to the disease causing cardiovascular failure. The utero infection will normally affect all of the unborn puppies. Keeping dogs vaccinated against parvo from three weeks to age three or four has greatly reduced the presence of this form of parvo at birth.

Parvo is a preventable disease. Vaccines given at six to eight weeks can protect a litter of puppies from this devastating killer. Many people can lose every puppy they have from parvo. If one puppy has it, chances are every puppy will become infected. Since symptoms can take up to six days to show up, if one puppy shows signs of parvo, you should take every puppy in the litter to the vet immediately. Dogs should have parvo vaccines every three weeks following the intial vaccination, up to twenty weeks of age. Booster shots should also be given after a year of age and every year afterwards.

Parvo is a disease that spreads quickly and should be taken seriously. It is considered extremely contagious. If one puppy has it, you are right to assume every puppy will be affected. Disinfecting the kennel or sleeping area of the dogs with bleach can help, but once exposed, every puppy should be examined by a veterinarian immediately. The parvo virus has been known to stay active and affect the soil of a contaminated kennel area for up to one year.

Do not expect any result except death if puppy or dog is not promptly treated. The vaccinations available are harmless and offer protection from all known strains of the disease.

Doctors usually define catarrh as an excess of thick phlegm or mucus in one of the airways or cavities of the body. What are the symptoms of catarrh?

Doctors usually define catarrh as an excess of thick phlegm or mucus in one of the airways or cavities of the body.

This most commonly occurs in the sinuses at the front of the face either side of the nose, but can also occur in the throat, ears or chest.

Although catarrh is not a condition in itself, it's often a symptom of other conditions such as a cold, hay fever or other types of allergy-triggered problem, or nasal polyps (fleshy swellings inside the nose).

Catarrh is caused by the body's natural defences – the immune system – reacting to an infection or irritation.

When this occurs, it sends white blood cells to the source of the infection or irritation, which then releases molecules that cause the mucous membranes to swell and produce mucus.

I haven’t heard that it causes a low WBC count but mine has been low for years. It will be interesting to see if it’s changed the next time I go to the doctor. I haven’t had anything diet in about 7 weeks.

Congratulations. You’ve given yourself a wonderful gift. May you keep feeling better and better.

I gave up all aspartame products back in September and lasted almost 4 months then my parents visited end of December and I was back on it!
All was going ok til about a month ago and now I am back to an odd feeling in my ears, my allergies are worsened, my stomach is ultra sensitive, my legs ache and have weird bruises, my fingers ache, I get tingling and numbness in my hands and feet, depression and anxiety.
This time I need to quit for good!!

Sarah I have had swelling in the legs, headaches, ringing in the ears, aching joints, bad skin, tingling and numbness in my hands and feet, depression, anxiety at times..I hope you can stay off it, I have been off it for 3 weeks and I will never go back, it is far to frightening-I want to live a long life, I wish you the same GIVE IT UP GIRL and good luck

4 days off the evil stuff, have not had many withdrawal symptoms just nausea, lack of appetite, trouble sleeping, lethargy and mood swings but my raynauds is gone, my joints are feeling better, the tingling in my leg has gone and a lot of the other aches and pains are disappearing!

Hi Gwenda, your post has inspired me. I am totally addicted to diet coke and I want so badly to be able to quit and trying to prepare myself to try again. I know I am unhealthy and I know I am probably slowly killing myself. I am wondering if you were able to continue being free from the addiction and how your symptoms are now. Did the ringing in the ears stop? Thanks so much!

I just quit aspartame because I’ve been trying to get pregnant for the last year and I’ve succeeded a few times. But, unfortunately it never lasts longer than 6 weeks. I started taking progesterone to help. But, then I remembered someone mentioning aspartame to me about five years ago and I blew off the warning. So, I looked it up and sure enough, I found it causes miscarriage and birth defects. I’m now convinced that the reason such a HUGE number of children are born with autism these days and an even larger number are diagnosed with ADHD and it’s because of aspartame, along with the rest off the artificial sweeteners. I’m including those “made from real sugar” like Splenda. I was drinking diet caffeine free Dr Pepper. So, I’m thinking maybe the withdrawal everyone’s complaining about are caffeine withdrawals. I have been drinking purely soda as my only fluid since high school at the latest. I can’t remember when I started on sodas and I can’t remember ever drinking anything but. So, since at least 1987, when I was 12. I quit caffeine in 12 days by drinking caffeine free Dr Pepper and when I’d start getting a headache, I would drink one of the caffeinated cans that are like 8 ounces, tiny. But, I haven’t had any soda in five days. No withdrawal. I miss the sharp carbonation on my throat, but my future baby is more than worth it.

What I’m trying to find out is how long before the aspartame is out of my system? If you know that, please email me.

Thanks for all this info. I want to see the long list of the complications of aspartame too. I’m 38 and have had tendonitis for years, along with joint pain, hair loss, major memory problems, etc.

I just quit Diet Coke, after a friend telling me about aspartame.
I was telling him how bad my finger joints had gotten in the past few weeks. I had gotten to where I had to quit my business because I could not use my fingers. Swollen joints, high pain from joint movement, and excruciating pain when I would even just move my fingers. Many things just got impossible to do.
