Mononucleosis can remain for years and years if it is not treated with the right mononucleosis treatment.

Mononucleosis is an infectious disease and is more commonly known as mono. There are a number of mono symptoms. Some of the common mono symptoms are:

  • Sore Throat
  • Swollen Glands
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Swollen Spleen
  • Swollen Lymph Nodes
  • Skin Rash

Symptoms of Mononucleosis:
Mononucleosis has various symptoms. Although mild mononucleosis symptoms are light and similar to that of a common cold, acute mononucleosis has distinct symptoms and can be recognized easily.

Some of the most common acute mononucleosis symptoms are the followings:

Sore Throat – When a person is infected with the Epstein Barr virus he will experience a sore throat and this is the first sign that a person can know in advance that he is infected with mononucleosis. The throat becomes red and inflammation occurs, for the blood vessels in the infected area are widen and becomes permeable allowing the immune proteins, white blood cells to flood into the cell tissue. When someone experiences a sore throat the best thing one can do is to consult a doctor and give complete rest to the body and avoid overuse of voice.

Swollen Glands – This is a distinctive symptom of the contagious mononucleosis. Sore and swollen glands are commonly experienced by mononucleosis victims. Normally, swollen glands are felt in the neck but they can also occur in the armpits and in the groin area.

Fever – Of all the symptoms of mononucleosis, fever is the most common symptoms that are experienced by mononucleosis patients. Sometimes fever rises to high levels, above 40 degree C or 104 degree F and this can be dangerous for children by causing fit or seizure in them.

Respiratory Problems – Mononucleosis patients also experience difficulties while breathing. The inflamed glands and swollen throat can create respiratory problems and cause difficulty in breathing. Some of the respiratory mononucleosis symptoms are coughing, cold, sneezing and nasal discharge.

Ruptured Spleen – An enlarged and ruptured spleen occurs rarely in about 2 or 3 of every mononucleosis victims. Here the spleen ruptures causing internal bleeding and arise complicated situations in the blood pressure. A ruptured spleen requires emergency hospitalization or it may make the situation more complicate and even result in sudden death.

These symptoms are a warning signs and can be fatal. If they are not checked in the right time, it can raise complications in making recovery from this contagious disease.

Mono Symptoms can begin to appear four to six weeks after the first infection of the EVB virus. People infected by this virus, might have some or all of these symptoms of mono. It is also possible to have mild symptoms and will not be substantially affected by them. Due to the variety of symptoms, quite possibly the group of symptoms could be incorrectly diagnosed as another infection, such as flu or strep throat.

The symptoms of acute infectious mononucleosis is a sore red throat, swollen lymph nodes, fever and relieve shortness of breath. Although these infectious symptoms of mononucleosis can be annoying and uncomfortable, but this is how the body eliminate the EBV virus from the system. Read about mononucleosis causes.

More than 100 Mohave County potential flu cases pending state lab examination from past two weeks

Arizona is widespread with confirmed influenza cases and there are more than 100 Mohave County reports of potential flu cases pending for the past two weeks, officials said Thursday.

Arizona Department of Health Services bumped up the state’s level of reported flu cases from regional to widespread for the week of Dec. 30 through Jan. 5. The state’s most up-to-date numbers have confirmed flu cases in 14 of the state’s 15 counties. La Paz is the only county without a confirmed case.

Only nine flu cases have been confirmed so far in Mohave County since the flu season began Sept. 30. But Anna Scherzer, epidemiologist with Mohave County Department of Public Health, said she anticipates that most of the pending flu case reports will be confirmed by the state’s lab.

Flu symptoms include: fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.

Arizona is not alone in increased influenza cases — 41 other states reported widespread activity last week, according to a state Department of Health Services press release.

Havasu Regional Medical Center and the local Walgreens, 25 S. Lake Havasu Ave., don’t exactly need the state’s Department of Public Health’s lab to confirm that increased numbers of local residents have been sick.

The hospital has seen “a slight increase in patients with flu-like symptoms in our emergency department,” said Carol Dumais, hospital spokeswoman in an email. “We are aware of influenza trends around the state and across the country, and are preparing accordingly.”

A few hundred flu shots have been given out at Walgreens in recent days since details of widespread influenza around the country have been reported, said Wayne Cohen, pharmacy manager of the local Walgreens. Also, sales of Tamiflu, a drug prescribed for the treatment of flu infections, recently has increased as well, he added.

With news in the past week or so of influenza becoming widespread around the country, Cohen said he’s pleased that people have taken the information seriously.

A true reflection of flu cases always is difficult to get a handle on, Scherzer said.

“We don’t always get good counts on (influenza),” Scherzer said. The problem is that it’s up to the facilities, doctors, schools and daycares to report potential flu cases, she said. And after that, the state’s lab tests the flu to confirm it, she added.

The state lab’s activity is important to learn what types of influenza are circulating, Scherzer said. It helps decide what strain of influenza needs to be put in the next year’s vaccine, she added.

Scherzer said the vaccine continues to be well-matched with the flu strain that currently is circulating.

This flu season (Sept. 30, 2012 to Sept. 28, 2013) started earlier than the previous year with the first confirmed case at the end of October, Scherzer said. Last flu season, the first confirmed case was in December and the flu season topped out in mid-February, she added.

Last year, Mohave County reported flu cases through mid-April, Scherzer said.

Hello. My daughter will be 2 next month. She has been terribly sick. I have taken her to the doctor 2 times. I was told that she could have influenza. My concern is that her temperature keeps peeking to 103.0+ during the day and 104.1+ in the night. I have been alternating Tylenol and Motrin every 3-4 hours, but it doesn’t seem to help much. I have also been giving her luke warm baths to bring the temp down. I’m scared that during the night her temp could peak and I won’t know. Could this make her have seizures or do damage long term? When is it necessary to take her to the emergency room? What else could I do to help her? Am I being an overly scared or is this normal when kids get the flu?

Hi M.-
You have every right to be worried. If her temp keeps spiking like that you probably should consult her pediatrician. So many times we are so worried that we forget to mention the important small stuff. Have you tried giving her popsicles to keep her temp down and keeping her hydrated?

get that little girl in the hospital, admit her, have them take stool samples and blood tests. NOW. there is no reason to wait, it is serious.

Elderberry extract is by far my favorite cold remedy, or rather preventive remedy. I no longer get colds, because I always take elderberry extract at the first sign of one. I do not fear catching the flu, because elderberry extract is such a great anti-viral agent.
I have to disagree with one thing I read about elderberry in the People’s Pharmacy Herb Library: “Prudence suggests that pregnant women and nursing mothers should not use elderberry.” This was written right after a section about dangers of toxicity from elderberry leaves and stems, which pregnant or nursing women might indeed want to avoid. But I’ve heard from a well-known herbalist that elderberry extract can be taken by a nursing woman who’s baby has a cold, to help the baby recover faster. And pregnant women will want to do their own research, but personally, if I were pregnant and felt a cold or flu coming on, I would not hesitate to use elderberry extract. I feel that it is perfectly safe, whereas there could possibly be problems for babies whose mothers get sick during gestation, especially if they wind up taking OTC medicines for cold or flu symptoms.

Tonsils and their function

The tonsils are two small sacs of lymphoid tissue near the root of the tongue. Normal tonsils are usually about the same size and have the same pink color as the surrounding area.

Tonsils form Waldeyer's tonsillar ring -- a ring of lymphatic tissue around the entrance of the pharynx. The tonsils are named according to their location. The palatine tonsils are located on the lateral walls of the oropharynx. The lingual tonsils are located at the base of the tongue. The adenoids (pharyngeal tonsils) are high in the throat behind the nose and the roof of the mouth (soft palate), and are not easily visible through the mouth. The tubal tonsils are located in the roof of the nasopharynx.

The basic function of tonsils and adenoids is to help the body to build up immunity to infectious organisms entering into the body through the mouth or nose. They protect the throat and lungs from infection.

Tonsils and adenoids are most active in childhood when many infections are encountered for the first time, and reach the full size when the child is six or seven. The tonsils work as a filter which fights and protects the entire human system against the foreign organisms. Tonsils produce antibodies, which fight against the infection, stopping its further spread to other parts of the body.

The most common problems occurring with the tonsils are recurrent or chronic infections and significant enlargement (adenotonsillar hyperplasia).

Tonsillitis is an inflammatory condition of the tonsils due to bacteria, virus, allergies, or respiratory problems. The term tonsillitis generally refers to inflammation of the palatine tonsils. When inflamed, tonsils become swollen and red with a grayish or yellowish coating. Tonsillitis usually begins with a sudden sore throat and painful swallowing. Tonsillitis causes tonsils and throat tissues to swell obstructing air from passing in and out of the respiratory system. The tonsils infection is common in children and teenagers but rare in adults.

Acute Tonsillitis
Acute tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils caused bacteria or viruses. Acute tonsillitis lasts for about 4 to 6 days. It is an uncomplicated form which commonly affects children of ages 5-10.

Chronic Tonsillitis
Chronic tonsillitis is a persistent infection of the tonsils and can cause tiny stone formation. It is diagnosed when a sore throat is present for at least 3 months with tonsillar inflammation, and tender cervical nodes. Persistent tonsillar infections can lead to enlargement of tonsils. Despite antibiotic treatment, the tonsillar area can remain infected.

A team led by Dr. Russell Stothard, head of the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative at the Natural History Museum, London, recently conducted a field evaluation, which reported that even if stool or urine examinations are negative, a tissue biopsy might reveal eggs. Detection of antibody might as well be useful for epidemiological surveys as well as clinical research and management.

Schistosomiasis can be successfully treated using an oral drug Praziquantel. Though a single dose of this drug can cure the infection, it is not effective in preventing re-infection of the patient, which is highly probable in an affected area. Researches are presently being carried on to develop a vaccine for this disease.

The toxic metalloid, antimony was initially used in low doses to treat schistosomiasis, but this is not used in present days. Another drug called Oxamniquine is used outside the U.S to treat Schistosoma mansoni.

Investigations are being carried on a new Egyptian drug, Mirazid for the treatment of this disease.

Other forms of oral medication that are being experimented with are medicinal castor oil, Gopo Berry (by Dr Chidzere of Zimbabwe in 1980s), etc.

Acrolein, copper sulfate, and niclosamide can be used to eliminate the fresh-water snails that cause the disease.

Crayfish breeding can also be helpful for the purpose though it must be done with caution.

Avoiding water bodies previously detected with snails.

Use of sapindus plant(Phytolacca dodecandra) to prevent the disease by controlling snails. Aklilu Lemma and Legesse Wolde-Yohannes received the Right Livelihood Award in 1989 for their research.

Better plans and designs while creating dams and irrigation schemes can prevent this disease from spreading among the nearby population.

Influenza B: Cause, Symptom, Treatment and Prevention

Influenza B can cause respiratory and stomach symptoms. It can be easily treated. Vaccine and staying away from virus can prevent it.

Influenza or the flu refers to a respiratory infection that can be caused by a variety of viruses. The virus will move through the air and become inhaled through the mouth or nose. Approximately 5-20 percent of people catch the flu each year in the United States. Influenza can cause a serious infection or death in newborns, the elderly and people with some chronic illnesses. The viruses that cause influenza are classified as A, B or C types, depending on how their proteins are composed. Type B viruses are the most common in humans.

All flu viruses travel in the air as droplets of moisture. It spreads when people talk, cough or sneeze, releasing this moisture. Some people inhale this moisture in the air while others touch objects like a keyboard or telephone that are covered in the virus and then transfer them to the eyes, mouth or nose by touching these areas.

The influenza virus alters and creates new strains constantly so those that have already been affected by the flu may have developed antibodies to ward of a specific type of flu virus. If you are exposed to a virus in the future that is similar to those you have experienced before or you have been given a vaccination against a certain type of flu, it will be easier for the body to fight off the infection.

The antibodies a person has developed will not be able to prevent an infection caused by new strains of the virus or subtypes of the virus that are different than those you have already been exposed to.

Different mold species can have varying health effects, but it is important to remember that any excessive mold growth needs to be taken care of, regardless of the species. Any excessive mold growth can lead to increased allergies, toxicity, and house/building structural problems.

Aspergillus Versicolor. The most common species of Aspergillus. Among skin problems and hair loss, this fungus has been linked to severe abdominal pain, acid reflux, and vomiting.

This group of molds can thrive on water damaged, cellulose-rich material in buildings such as sheet rock, paper, ceiling tiles, insulation backing, wallpaper, etc. In the majority of cases where Stachybotrys is found indoors, water damage has gone unnoticed or ignored since it requires extended periods of time with increased levels of moisture for growth to occur. Stachybotrys is usually black and slimy in appearance. Events of water intrusion that are addressed quickly tends to support the growth of more xerophilic fungi such as Penicillium and Aspergillus.

Permanent problems sometimes associated with fungal exposure after treatment:

Note: Many of these symptoms could also be the onset of other illnesses, as well, and only a skilled physician is diagnosed to give you a full and qualified diagnosis. Additionally, it is important to know that much of these symptoms will deplete after vacating the building. Diet, nutrition, and medical assistance are extremely important.

As a caring cat owner the best thing to do is to try and keep your cat as comfortable as possible.

  • Make sure they have a warm and comfortable place to sleep

Once a cat has cat flu they may become a carrier of the disease which may either make them sick again in the future even if they have not come in to contact with another sick cat, or they may infect other cats.

This is one of the main reasons for having your healthy cat vaccinated against the disease, as you can never be sure which cats they come into contact with, you may even inadvertently spread the disease yourself by stroking a seemingly healthy cat who may be carrying the illness.

The vaccine for cat flu can be given either separately or as a combined vaccine for other infectious diseases.

Your vet will discuss this with you at your visit. See our page regarding cat vaccinations in general for more information.

Opiate withdrawal refers to a wide range of symptoms that can occur once opioid intake is interrupted or reduced. The amount, length and intensity of the symptoms vary from person to person. For some individuals, it can be a natural process, and for others, withdrawal can be severe. Opiate withdrawal occurs because it takes time for the body to regulate to no longer having the drug in the system.

An opioid is synthetic narcotic works similarly to naturally occurring opiates. These opiate-like substances bind to the opioid receptor sites in the brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract. Once the drugs attach to these receptor sites, they immediately exert their effects. The brain manufactures its own opioids which are responsible for a host of physical responses. Some of these reactions are the decrease of pain, a slower respiratory rate, and sometimes even used to control anxiety or depression. However, the body does not produce the number of opioids needed to manage high levels of pain. Taking prescription or illicit opioids can reduce adverse effects caused by pain, but with an array of dangerous side-effects.

Opiate withdrawal symptoms can be harsh to surpass if not correctly treated. The fear of going through withdrawal is what keeps many people dependent upon drugs like Heroin and Oxycodone. They don’t want to stop using opiates because they fear a return of pain and withdrawal symptoms that can resemble the worst imaginable flu. Symptoms can affect the individual both physically and emotionally.

An important fact to keep in mind is that different opioids remain in your system for various lengths of time what can affect the withdrawal syndrome onset. The amount of time your symptoms last depends on a combination of factors including frequency and amount of the use, length of the addiction, as well as individual factors like your health and emotional status.

Opiate withdrawal symptoms can include

  • Strong cravings
  • Nausea
  • Cramps
  • Sweating
  • Chills
  • Goosebumps
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Shakes
  • Irritation
  • Agitation
  • Anxiety
  • Muscle aches
  • A runny nose
  • Yawning
  • Insomnia
  • Dilated pupils.

In most cases, these symptoms can be managed by a specialized medical treatment facility Opiate withdrawal can be a long and painful process and very hard to get through. For health compromised patients, untreated and unmonitored withdrawal can lead to unnecessary medical complications such as nausea, rapid heart-rate, elevated blood pressure and dehydration. The consecutive loss of fluids & electrolytes can cause abnormal heart rate and low potassium levels, which can lead to blood circulation issues or even a heart attack.

Benign Fasciculation Syndrome

No, although exhibiting some of the same symptoms, ALS and BFS are two distinctly separate illnesses.

Currently, there is no known cure for BFS

This condition represents a hyperexcitability of the neuromuscular system.

Common symptoms of BFS are frequent muscle twitches (fasciculations or fascics), generalized fatigue, "pins and needles" sensations, migrating numbness, muscle cramping and/or spasms in the affected areas (usually the feet and calves), muscle aches and stiffness exercise intolerance, headaches, and itchiness.

Clinically some patients have mild increases in creatine kinase. Muscle biopsy may show mild neurogenic changes. Electrodiagnostic studies show peripheral nerve hyperexcitability.

Often the symptoms will get worse at night, or during periods of sickness or viral infections, stress, or overexertion.

Many people experiencing these symptoms fear they may have ALS or MS. A simple clinical rule is that fasciculations in relaxed muscle are never indicative or motor system disease unless there is an associated weakness, atrophy, or reflex change.

Fasciculations, or fascics are localized twitches of the muscle fibers.

From the On-Line Medical Dictionary:

  • A small local contraction of muscles, visible through the skin, representing a spontaneous discharge of a number of fibres innervated by a single motor nerve filament.

I believe it must really weaken your immune system in order for this to happen.

The first week was great. I could think clearer. Tasks and university work began to become easier to do due to being able to think more in depth and sequentially.

I may have to redo my units but if I am able to think as clear as the first week I am willing to make that sacrifice.

Does anyone who has gone cold turkey after long periods on Lexapro as to how long the withdrawals symptoms last?

i too am weened off lexapro.. this is my 5th day off of my 10mg of 8 months not long i know.

but i don't want to be on these any more as me and my partner are trying to conceive i think this med is blocking it and keeping is from conceiving so if we get what we want at the end its the only thing giving me hope from these horrendous side effects.

I really hope i can push from it but all people blog about is how bad the side effects are and the beginning stage. what about after the withdrawals.. is there hope?

my symptoms are feeling faint light headed migraine sweats shivers and shaking cant concentrate and patchy skin if this is it then fine i can get over this.. but how long will it last? also i am extremely tired won't stop sleeping and signed off from work due to nearly collapsing..:(.

Hey I have only been on for 9 months at 10 mg and I dosed myself down to 5mg for the past 3 days. I am experiencing pain in my neck but nothing else anyone has been talking about. Did you have any physical pain?

Just wondering if your neck pain went away? I was only on 10mg of lexapro for 7 weeks, and now have neck and shoulder stiffness with being on this drug and coming off of it.

To Denice and others with neck pain.

I am so happy someone finally mentioned the neck pain! I am being weaned off Lexapro, too. I also have fibromyalgia.. I always thought the Lexapro helped me control my fibro pain as much as helped with depression. As I am discontining the Lexapro, my fibro pain has increased. BUT now I also have a severe "pins and needles" neck pain, almost like a herniated disc. Is this the type pain you are speaking of?

Fentanyl is one of the strongest opiate drugs on the market. It is not a long-lasting drug so it is often used for surgery recovery and for breakthrough pain—meaning that when a person is already taking an opiate but has temporary pain that breaks through the opiate barrier, they may be given fentanyl.

Time-release formulations for fentanyl provide strong pain relief over time. They come in two forms—a lollipop and a patch. Fentanyl also comes as a small piece of film that can be dissolved under the tongue and a pill meant to be lodged inside the cheek. In hospital settings, fentanyl can be injected. For the individual abusing the drug outside a hospital, this is highly dangerous, as the difference between a therapeutic dose and a deadly dose is very small.

Several years ago illicit fentanyl entered the scene of the developing opioid crisis, where addicts seeking a stronger high were willing to risk overdose by using heroin cut with the drug. The fact that fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine, even a tiny bit too much can be fatal. When dealers began mixing unknown amounts of fentanyl with heroin and other drugs in order to increase their profits—often selling to an unsuspecting customer—overdose began to take the life of countless individuals across the U.S.

As with any opiate, the main symptoms of fentanyl abuse are euphoria, drowsiness, lethargy and mellowness. Fentanyl very quickly creates a tolerance to high doses, so a dose that is adequate for the intended high one week will probably not create that intended high even a few days later.

There are many other signs and symptoms of using fentanyl, either medically or illicitly, that are not desirable.

    These include:

    • Dizziness and lightheadedness
    • Dry mouth
    • Retention of urine
    • Suppression of breathing
    • Severe constipation
    • Itching or hives
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Loss of appetite
    • Weight loss
    • Headache
    • Difficulty seeing
    • Depression
    • Hallucinations
    • Bad dreams
    • Difficulty sleeping
    • Sweating
    • Shaking
    • Swollen extremities

In most cases, addiction is accompanied by a deterioration in personal integrity. It takes many unethical or criminal acts to maintain an addiction over time—either expenditure of large amounts of personal money or thefts, prescription fraud, doctor-shopping or other crimes, to get the drugs that are needed. A fentanyl addict normally has secrets from most or all of the people they encounter regularly. If the thefts are from a workplace, as often happens, they will be living a secret life while at work. Hospitals, pharmacies and nursing homes are often the sites of fentanyl theft by desperate employees.

6 weeks (ish) without aspartame. I feel better in myself but in the UK I’m struggling to find an alternative to drink. Diet coke has no calories. We now have a Coke Life here and that’s natural sweeteners but at 89 calories per can it’s not helping my diet. I don’t drink tea or coffee so my only alternative so far is water. Can’t add any flavourings as they all seem to have Aspartame. I’ve tried a few other drinks but I LIKE Coke. So many drinks have artificial sweeteners (Aspartame). I eat more fruit but that’s also more calories. Does anyone drink something else that I could get in the UK plse? Good luck to all going through detox. It’s hard work but definitely worth it. Love and hugs xxx

Do you like fruity drinks? I am working on quitting Diet DP – been a week now!
I’m drinking naturally sweetened energy drinks – 13 calories per drink. Let me know if you are interested and I can send you the info.

Yes very interested. Please let me know. Thanks in advance

    Regards Dawn 🙂 xx

Try True Lemon if available in UK. You can order online if not in your area but I’m not sure about the UK. It is 100% natural crystallized lemon that comes in little packets. I put a True Lemon and True Grapefruit in my water and I’m not as bored with it. I’m on week 6 of no aspartame and no caffeine. Still having issues but I’m hoping it gets better.

I have drank diet coke for yrs’i dont smoke or drink alchol so a diet coke was my stress reliever.i decided to quit 3 wks ago weaning myself off,wk 1 down to 2 bottles a day’headaches’joint pain, feeling sick and so depressed an irritable.wk 2 went down to 1 bottle.A constant muggy headache and mood swings. No energy and couldnt be bothered to do anything.wk 3 no d coke for 3 days,My head feels ready to explode, just shoot me now!Maybe cold turkey would have been quicker.Determined to carry on but hope start to feel human again soon!

I drank Pepsi Max nearly every day for 4 years I decided last Thursday that enough was enough.
I knew this wasn’t going to be easy but I have never felt so bad in all my life I would rather have a hangover!

    Panic Attacks
Lethargic (I slept nearly all weekend)
    Mood swings
    Lack of concentration

I’ve been drinking coconut water which has helped with the headaches and makes me feel better…I’m determined not to give up and have this nasty chemical out of my body for good!

I check everything now for Aspartame, even Robinsons has it in.

My friends laughed when I told them about my addiction and now they’ve seen how ill I’ve been they’re not laughing anymore!!

Sounds exactly what I was going through but with MSG product..these two are giving us diseases.

Aspartame withdrawal day 3 for me. I only used it in tea and coffee drinking about 5/6 cups a day. Today I am feeling very angry and frustrated and I have a headache and slight blurred vision. Thinking I should of slowly weaned myself off instead of suddenly stopping.
