I have expanded the section on aspartame withdrawal here, mainly because of your feedback (see the responses below). Many people have told me that even after realizing just how bad aspartame is, they just cannot stop using it. When they try to stop, they get that “need to have it” feeling. They also experience classic withdrawal symptoms such as headache, anger, or anxiety until they get the next hit.
Excitotoxins and your brain
All the reasons that cause this addiction seem to be unclear. We know that aspartame breaks down to a highly absorbable form of methanol in the liver, which impairs dopamine receptors witch decreases serotonin. This causes an addiction similar to alcoholism which also leads to depression and mood disorders. Some drinks such as Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi contain caffeine as well, and seem even harder to quit (Diet Coke seems to be the clear “addiction” winner).
Aspartame (like MSG) is an excitotoxin. An excitotoxin has effects similar to the way the word sounds. It is a toxin that excites brain cells to a much higher level. During this time you will heightened clarity and sharper cognition. After this brief “rush” it actually kills the cells. This is believed to be the cause of many brain disorders from cancer and stroke, to multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.
Check out this reader response I have dubbed: Aspartame Poisoning. Read for yourself the unbelievable damage she claims is caused by years of high consumption of Diet Coke and Diet Dr Pepper. There are also many more responses below. This is a much more serious problem than most of us think.
Please let me know if YOU are addicted to aspartame or have aspartame withdrawal. Please also list your symptoms. I would like to help others break the habit.
Please, please, please, help me, help others on this!
Note : Due to popular demand (and my love for the products), I have added the Internal Cleansing products below. This are THE BEST ones I could find. Feel free to contact me if you have questions or comments on them.
Stevia: There is some controversy over using Stevia. I am a BIG FAN (see Omica Organics to the right of this page). That said, I mix my Stevia with 1/2 Raw Honey or Grade B Maple Syrup. It just “feels right”. Try it, and let me know what you think. Remember, TRUVIA IS NOT STEVIA! It is made by Coka-cola and Cargil (yes, poisoned again).

Hi I decided to give up coke zero last week as I was spending so much money on it. I would usually drink about 2-3 litres a day and on the weekends too many to count. I’m 41 and have been a Diet/coke zero drinker for about 20 years. Well it is day 8 and I feel great. On the second day of detox I had such a bad headache that I couldn’t go to work and had this ringing in my ears. I have also noticed that I am not eating anything sweet like chocolate or cake and can’t believe that I am writing this, but I don’t want any! People have noticed that I have lost weight (around the tummy). For people that are finding it hard, keep going you will find it easier and you will feel better. So glad i found this site.
Well done you. Thinking about it, I’d have chocolate every day. Never really had a sweet tooth but don’t even want chocolate now. Keep at it xxxx
35 yr old female. Consumed 5 to 6 packets of crystal light a day for approximately the last 10 years of my life (major addiction). I don’t like water, so I flavored all my water. I decided to get healthy. I cut sugar, processed foods of all kinds, caffeine, milk, bread (anything that could be converted to sugar), HOWEVER…I did not cut my artificially sweetened drink packets. They are zero calories, zero sugar, zero carbs…so what’s the big deal? I held onto that one addiction. The one thing I didn’t wanna deprive myself of.
So I started reading articles about how “artificial sweeteners make you fat”. How could this be? Long story short, I called a nutrition expert and had the whole thing explained to me. So I cut my drink packets cold turkey. I can tell you this! Of all the withdrawal symptoms I’ve gone through on this journey (be it sugar, caffeine, whatever. ) Aspartame takes the cake. Immediately within hours of not getting up and drinking my morning dose, the headache set it. By about 3pm I was experiencing the WORST headache I’ve ever had in my life. Felt as if my brain was swelling and pressing against every part of my skull. My muscles went tight. My knees went stiff and joints ached that haven’t ever ached. I was sweating on and off throughout the day. Literally bed ridden and useless. Felt almost like a bad flu. I slept all day trying to sleep off the headache. Day 2, tried to play in a softball game, felt extremely weak, sweaty, jittery, foggy, elbows and knees hurt…head still hurting. No appetite, angry and moody as hell. I shouldn’t have ever gone.
So today is my day 3 without aspartame. MY HEAD STILL HURTS! My brain feels like a bruise. I know I’m only one diet drink away from feeling better, but I’m not gonna do it. F you aspartame!
I add Truly Natural Vitamin C from Healthforce to my water now. Every bit as good as Crystal Light IMO and super great for you. Hope that helps,
Hi Leslie, Hope you can hang in. It. Ignatian take 4 to 6 weeks, but know that your body has done all it,can do and is mending. It just hurts to get better.
Well done Lesley. The headaches will get better. I’m so conscious of buying bottled drinks without inspecting the additives now but that’s also become second nature. Weirdest thing is going into a pub and not asking for Bacardi and diet coke. For years I gave my kids diet coke as it was ‘better’ than fat coke cos it had no calories. I used to moan like mad if they drank fat coke. Now I’m asking for it too. Good luck with your ongoing battle 🙂 Love and hugs xx
How Can I Get Over My Cold?
Most colds last about a week, but they can persist longer, especially in children, older adults, and people with heath problems. A cough without phlegm can linger for weeks, or even months, after your cold clears up.
There is no cure for the common cold, but the following treatments can relieve your symptoms and help you feel better:
- Rest to allow your body to fight off the virus.
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Gargle with warm saltwater, use throat sprays, and try sore throat lozenges to relieve a scratchy throat.
- Don't smoke, and avoid secondhand smoke.
- Avoid drinking alcohol.
- Use over-the-counter cold medication as needed to relieve symptoms. Over-the-counter medication can thin mucus, reduce congestion, and relieve aches and pains. Check with your doctor if you're unsure how these medications will interact with other treatments you're already taking.
Having a cold is no fun, but if you know what to expect and how to treat cold symptoms, relief should be quickly on its way.

“This year, the flu strain mutated a little bit and there is one component of the flu strain that is causing the flu in people who actually did get the shot,” she said.
Several local hospitals are now limiting visitors to try and stop the spread of the flu. At the University of Maryland Medical Center, no visitors under the age of 18 will be allowed in the hospital, only two adult visitors can see a patient at one time and visitors experiencing flu symptoms are not permitted.
Flu season normally lasts through February and March.
Experts say they are expecting another surge in flu cases later in the season.
I was prescribed Lamictal for BiPolar. I started off at 25mg a day for 14 & then 5omg for 14 days. I am on my 4th day ( of the 50mg) & am having horrible "flu" like symptoms. Has anyone else experienced this. Thanks for any info.:)
I have hoarseness weight gain achiness in my legs and feet and more I askes to be dropped to 50 as I was on 100mg and had more side effects
Are your feet swollen and hands? do you feel weak? and you mentioned you have gained weight, What other side effects do you have because they may be serious.
contact your doc, and once again i ask u r u on other meds cause of the interactions?
Hi Im bi polar and I have been on in it for 3 or 4 years was on 200mg now Im on 300mg, no side effects but 4 me. Its a common side effect to have flu like symtoms, (body aches and chills).
I would still recommend u tell your doc.
hope this helps
i did talk to my doc and i think it is time for a second opinion. did anyone gain weight. i also have gained 15 lbs most fluid but how good is that on the rest of your body. i am afraid it is going to effect my heart
Try to avoid fluids that have to much sodium in them..that causes water retention. even bottled water. there is on form nestle gas free (at least here) free of sodium, also dont add sault to your meals, as sodium is a prservative that pratically comes in everything.
I appreciate everyone's comments. That is really the only side-effect I have had is the flu like symptoms. I have not gained weight at all. To the one that commented on the retention of fluid, that is not normal, if your Dr insist you stay on Lamictal maybe you could request they put you on 25mg of Hydrochlorothiazide a day. That will drop that water weight real quick. I haven't heard of weight gain with Lamictal. Actually, one of the side effects is "Anorexia". Has anyone else experienced weight gain ( or loss) with Lamictal?
Several side effects are possible with Lamictal. Weight gain does appear to be one of them, although it is not among the most commonly reported Lamictal side effects. This data comes from clinical trials where the drug was extensively studied and side effects were documented.
In studies, between 1 and 5 percent of people taking Lamictal for bipolar disorder treatment experienced weight gain. However, weight gain was not reported as a side effect in people taking it to control seizures.
Pain that sets in right after a mealespecially a big mealoften means the stomach is overloaded and its contents have nowhere to go but up. But you may be able to prevent this without taking medication.
"I would stress not eating big, fatty meals and watching [your intake of alcohol and tobacco]," says Dr. Coyle, who is a spokesman for the American College of Gastroenterology.
And it's another reason not to recline after dining.

Sometimes acid escaping from your stomach can make its way into the back of your throat, leaving an icky, bitter taste in your mouth. In really extreme cases, this can cause choking.
If that happensespecially at nightyou should see a doctor. "I'm very aggressive with therapy if patients wake up choking," says Dr. Coyle, adding that he usually recommends acid-suppressing medications like proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers, and antacids. (Dr. Coyle is on the Speakers Bureau for Takeda Pharmaceuticals, which markets proton pump inhibitors).

You might think you're in the early stages of a cold when your voice starts cracking, but hoarseness can be another heartburn symptom.
If stomach acid is seeping into your esophagus it can irritate your vocal cords, says Dr. Pfanner, who is also a gastroenterologist at Scott & White, in Temple, Texas. Pay attention to when your voice sounds more husky than usual. If it's after you've eaten, you may have reflux.

A sore throat is another classic cold or flu symptom that might actually be caused by digestive problems.
If your throat tends to ache only after meals, you may have heartburn. Unlike with a cold or the flu, however, this type of sore throat can also be chronic. If you don't develop other symptoms, such as sniffling or sneezing, consider acid reflux.

Many respiratory symptoms, such as chronic cough and wheezing, can also be due to heartburn, likely because stomach acid is getting into your lungs.
If you suspect heartburn is at the root of your breathing difficulties—possibly because it occurs immediately after eating—you may want to talk to your doctor about getting a pH test. The test is an outpatient procedure that measures the amount of acid in your esophagus over a 24-hour period and can help determine if you have acid reflux.

The coughing and wheezing from heartburn can get so bad they could become triggers for asthma.
But the worst was my racing mind. I could not shut it off. I didn't sleep well and during the day it was so bad that it was hard to concentrate and that made me even more tired. The progesterone was amazing. It took a while to fully work. (Maybe six to seven months in all) But it did work. The libido never did get very high but was there.
I am noticing now, though, that some of the symptoms are returning, so I will work on adjusting my amount of progesterone used each night until I get it right again. I am 42 and know that I have been going through perimenopause (blood test showed it) for the last two years so I'm sure I just need an increase.
Hope this helps anyone who is going through the hell that this causes. It's hard to feel like a decent wife and mom when you have to deal with this.
18) I never thought anything of my symptoms of anxiety, low libido, poor memory ever being related until my doctor sent me for tests because I wasn't getting pregnant. Now that I have an idea of what's going on I feel a lot better about it. Hope there is a solution to this though.
17) I definitely have pmdd. I have not had a period in over three months. I am 43 years old and i feel like i have no life. I can't sleep and when i finally fall asleep i have a difficult time waking up.
I have bloating, severe indigestion, constipation, and have not had sex in too long. I have had abdominal pain a while back, but still have pain at certain times of the month. my doctor ordered blood work for hormone levels, and thyroid. I have extremely low, practically nonexistent progesterone levels, very low testerone if any. Not to mention estrogen is low. It's not even on the chart. It falls in between a black hole and not quite menopause.
I have tried hrt, however, i developed a cyst in my breast over a seven week treatment due to hrt, so i stopped taking any hormone replacement medication.
i have taken all of the other recommended herbal meds, however still no improvement. i have done tons of research and i am a registered nurse but i can't find any solutions, not even one. please help.
15) I have had some hormone issues and I have been seeing a naturopath doctor for help and the greatest treatment for me has been the wild yam cream. It has natural progesterone and it has helped me get pregnant if you are ttc. I would recommend seeing someone to put in balance the whole body, not just the symptoms. you won't regret it.
14) I have been in perimenopause for a couple of years.I am currently on hormones, and antidepressants and still not doing much better. Depression, fatigue, memory, concentration loss insomnia and severe bloating, heartburn and digestive problems have taken over my life. I am considering trying Amberen, a natural hormone I read about on the internet.
I have suffered from chronic depression and anxiety for many years and going through perimenopause doesn't help any. I have had all kinds of tests done and tried all kinds of meds, even herbal stuff and nothing seems to help.
Please post if you have any suggestions for me! Thanks.
13) wow. i haven't felt myself for a while now. i have two children and a year ago i stopped taking my pill. i didn't get pregnant and my partner and i went to a fertility specialist who sent us away to get tested.
i thought it was my partner with the problem but the results came back saying my progesterone levels were lower than a male's levels.
